Here’s some additional background information if you’re interested in learning more!:

- During his trial, Guiteau exhibited incredibly bizarre behavior. He cursed and insulted everyone in the courtroom, including his own lawyer (who was also his brother-in-law) and the judge. Then, even after being found guilty, Guiteau remained delusional. He made plans for a lecture tour and even advertised for a wealthy Christian wife under 30 years old in the New York Herald. Then finally, even at his execution, Guiteau notoriously danced his way to the gallows, shook the executioner’s hand, and read a poem he wrote called “I am Going to the Lordy.”

- Guiteau believed he played a crucial role in Garfield's election victory, despite only giving a few rambling speech to tiny audiences. On top of this, Guiteau initially prepared the speech under the assumption that that Ulysses S. Grant would be the presidential nominee. Thus, when he was delivering the speech, he simply replaced any mention of Grant’s name with Garfield’s, resulting in a final product that made very little sense.

- Early on, Guiteau exhibited signs of developmental issues, with his sister reporting that he was very late in learning to speak and seemed to be in constant, excited motion. Later on, during his trial, psychiatrist Edward Charles Spitzka testified that Guiteau was insane and had "never been anything else." Then even after his execution, Guiteau’s brain was preserved for study and today is held at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Fun fact: He also joined a free love convene (it was very religious but besides that self explanatory, free love) called the Oneida community where he was hated so much no one wanted to do him and they all called him Charles Getout

If I remember correctly, when buying his k*lling weapon, he had a choice between a revolver and the excat same revolver but decorated, and he chose to pay more for the decorated gun becuase he wanted everyone to see it after he did it (like a museum artifact)

You forgot one of the most interesting parts, Garfield didn’t die until 80 days after being shot from infection (possibly due to his doctors sticking unwashed hands and tools into him)

This crime was set in 1880 that meal was probably a high class meal for the time.

This was during the age of American Politics called the "Spoils System" where it was common that if you played a big role in securing primaries, caucuses, districts, etc. you would receive a titled position (good paying cushy job and sway of polices) if the guy the Big Job.

Carlie Guiteau had a very distorted idea of his contribution and believed he deserved some of the spoils.

Also: Garfield didn't immediately die; he was shot on July 2 but died September 19. He was on the road to recovery but some incompetent doctors caused an infection due to unsanitary work habits that ultimately killed him.

If Garfield didn’t die, Guiteau would not have been executed. They didn’t change the charge to murder until after he died. It was also one of the first major cases where they considered an insanity plea.

Guiteau also, around 1880, met and campaigned for a congressman running for the senate who also made a few speeches for Garfield. That congressman was future president Benjamin Harrison.
