- This case grew to become one of history’s most infamous stories of crime as a result of Truman Capote’s non-fiction novel, ‘In Cold Blood, ’ which chronicled the Clutter Family murders. As Capote researched for this book, he collected interviews with local residents, investigators, and even the perpetrators themselves to ultimately compile 8, 000 pages of notes. Furthermore, Capote also developed a strong fascination with Smith and even eventually befriended him.

- Smith’s first stint in jail was a 5-10 year sentence for burglary, an unlawful fight to avoid prosecution, and escaping from jail. He was on the run for over a year, but was eventually re-captured in NYC and served just over 3 years of his sentence at the Kansas State Penitentiary before being released. It was during this time in prison that Smith met Hickock.

- Instead of leaving the Clutter family’s home with the $10, 000 they were seeking, the duo only ended up taking $50 in cash, a pair of binoculars, and a transistor radio. After fleeing the scene, the two men idly roamed the country for over six weeks until they were eventually captured in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I read In Cold Blood for my crime lit and film class and it was a very fascinating story. I’d highly recommend the movie as well because the movie tells Truman Capote’s story as he was writing the book. In Cold Blood was the last finished book Capote ever wrote before dying from liver failure
