Some further information if you’re interested (warning - very graphic):

Brewer and his two friends were avowed white supremacists and affiliated with the KKK. Aside from Brewer, one was sentenced to death, and the other recieved a life sentence.

The evidence reveals that Byrd's body was severed about a mile and a half down the logging and asphalt roads, resulting in death, but that his torso was dragged another mile and a half before it was deposited in front of a local black church. Byrd's injuries reveal not only that he was alive during half of his tortuous journey, but also that he was conscious for most, if not all, of that time-attempting to hold up his head and relieve the pain of the asphalt scraping and tearing his skin. Evidence shows that the trio also spray painted Byrd’s face and defecated on him prior to the dragging.

In wake of this horrific crime, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was passed and it expanded the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes which are motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.

When asked if he regretted his actions, brewer responded, "As far as any regrets, no, I have no regrets. No, I'd do it all over again, to tell you the truth."

Guy is a complete menace. Not only commits a heinous hate crime. Also gets every deathrow inmates last meal request taken away. Truly a demon.

As if being a murderer wasn't bad enough he also ruined the final meal request for others. That's pure evil.

So not only did he commit a hate crime... he also ruined the last moments of every other death row inmate on Texas. That's just petty

This one is personal for me. I was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi at Keesler Air Force Base in the summer of 1998 when this took place. I’m from California, so I had trepidation being in Mississippi to begin with but I found that things were pretty legit since Marines like myself never traveled out alone. Anyway, I heard that people in Jasper were pretty hostile and against the wishes of my detachment gunnery sergeant, I got a crew of seven of my guys and we drove to Jasper…all of us taking leave for 36 hours, so that the Byrd family could have their vigil for James without any fear. It wasn’t anything for publicity or anything and five of my guys were white…and the fact the agreed without hesitation, I’ll love em all forever. This moment crystallized something in me that things really hadn’t changed all that much that a Black man could be randomly lynched in such brutal fashion. RIP James…you deserved a better fate.

This was one of the most horrific single-target hate crimes I have ever read about, and the fact that he deliberately wasted the time of as many people as possible, got last meals revoked in my home state and they have yet to be successfully re-established, was part of the KKK, claimed until his death that Byrd deserved it and that he did nothing wrong by killing him AND dragged that poor man’s body all the way to the front of a black church and left it there in 1998, two years before the turn of the CENTURY was appalling and horrific in a way few others managed to reach. Also, one of the three of them is both still alive and will be *eligible for parole* in 14 years.
