- The critical pieces of evidence used against Cartwright in his conviction were the testimonies of his co-defendants. Each of them testified against Cartwright in exchange for reduced sentences, claiming that he was responsible for shooting Moraida, even though there was apparently no physical evidence directly linking Cartwright to the murder. The gun used in the crime was never recovered, and no blood or other forensic evidence was found connecting Cartwright to the actual killing.

- During his time on Death Row, Cartwright contributed to a series of articles called “Uncensored from Texas Death Row".
