- Danny Rolling’s killing spree was the inspiration for screenwriter Kevin Williamson to create ‘Scream’ - the popular horror movie franchise. The film debuted within less than 6 years from when Rolling’s series of killings was carried out. Ironically, these films made the late Rolling’s dreams come true, as when he was interrogated about his motive for his murder spree, he claimed he wanted to become a “superstar” like Ted Bundy and other infamous killers.

- Here an investigator’s description of how Rolling would pose his victims: “He would draw the victims to the edge of the bed and then leave them in a spread-eagle position as their final resting place.” Other poses included sitting-up a decapitated victim on her bed, then placing her head on a bookshelf facing her body. Additionally, Rolling was known for setting up props at the crime scene, and also cutting off body parts of his victims to keep as trophies.

- After the first two Gainesville killings, Rolling not only took the time to pose the corpses of his victims, but he also used their bathroom to take a shower.

- A year before his killing spree in Gainesville, Rolling had also committed a triple homicide where he broke into a Louisiana family’s home while they were making dinner, and killed everyone who was there. After the killings, he mutilated, cleaned, and posed the bodies in a similar fashion to how he would a year later during his Gainesville killing spree. In fact, it was only when detectives investigating this unrelated triple-homocide case noticed these similarities with the campus murders that they tipped off the Gainesville authorities about their suspicion of Rolling being the perpetrator.

It’s unsettling to hear about the killers’ crimes right before seeing their final meal request. I know by the time the execution comes around it feels natural to grant them one last bit of comfort but with the details of how their victims suffered still fresh on my mind, it feels a little audacious.
