- Massie became known as "the prisoner who wants to die" due to his repeated requests to waive appeals and expedite his execution. He argued that the automatic appeal process violated his rights, but courts consistently denied his requests to bypass these appeals.

- Following the murder of his second victim, Boris Naumoff, Massie pled guilty and was sentenced to death for a second time. However, this second death sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court of California because Massie’s lawyer had not consented to a guilty plea. He was sentenced to death a third and final time in 1989 and was executed in 2001 at San Quentin State Prison via lethal injection.
