- A ‘lonely hearts ad’ is a type of personal advertisement that individuals place into newspapers and magazines to seek a relationship or marriage. In this case, Fernandez found both Beck, and his other fiance, Janet Fay, through these advertisements. When Beck found Fay sleeping with Fernandez, she struck her with a hammer, and Fernandez helped to finish the job by strangling her as well. Within a few days, Fay’s family became suspicious, so the pair fled the area.

- After Beck and Fernandez killed Fay, the pair usded loney hearts ads to prey on other vulnerable women. Typically, Beck would pose as Fernandez’ sister, and once the pair established a relationship with each woman, they would then rob and potentially kill them. Although the pair’s true victim count is unknown, some suspect them to have killed over 20 total victims during their two years at large.

- Though Beck posed as Fernandez' sister to give him an air of respectability, she was said to be extremely jealous when Fernandez was with these women, and often went to great lengths to ensure they never consummated their relationships. In thes cases where Fernandez and the victim did, Beck would violently lash out at both of them.
