- The primary contributors to Jackson’s struggles within his marriage and personal life were his inability to maintain a steady job and heavy drug use. At the time of killing of his wife and children, he was also on parole for a previous felony conviction from 8 years prior where he shot his children’s grandfather.

- Though the younger of Jackson’s two stepdaugters didn’t seem to care whether James and his mother would divorce or not, the second expressed that she loved James and still wanted him to be a part of her life, even after the divorce. However, regardless of the differing responses, James would kill them both.

- At the scene of the crimes, Jackson left the following note: "I love Sharon, Sonny, Ericka. I could not take care of my family. I don't have a job. I gave them back to God. He and they will understand". The following morning, Sharon’s sister discovered the bodies and called the police. Jackson confessed his guilt, and his final words before being executed were: “Warden, murder me. I'm ready to roll. Time to get this party started"
