- Bonin considered these brutal murders to be a “group sport” and commited them with the aid of four young accomplices between the ages of 17 and 21 . Typically these boys would help Bonin to lure young male hitchhikers, schoolboys, or prostitutes, and then help him to brutalize them. One of the accomplices claimed that Bonin had “a kind of hypnotic” control over him, even going so far as to profess to the police in prison and hanging himself in his cell later that day.

- To ensure his potential victims couldn’t escape, Bonin removed all of the inner door handles from the passenger side, and rear doors of his van. Additionally, he kept the van armed with weapons like knives, pliers, and coat hangers to aid him in restraining and torturing his victims. Upon killing each boy, Bonin would typically discard their bodies near or alongside various freeways throughout southern California.

- Years before his series of murders, Bonin went on a prior spree of 5 kidnappings. In these cases, Bonin would pick up young boys in his van, brutally violate and torture them, and then release them (alive). When he was indicted on these counts of Kidnapping, Bonin was psychologically evaluated and determined to be a Sexual Psychopath. Due to this mental diagnosis, years of childhood trauma, and struggles reintegrating into society after his military service in Vietnam, Bonin was found to be “seriously lacking insight and responsibility” for the crimes he commited, and was incarcerated for just 5 years before being released.
