- Prior to flying to Alaska, Fautenberry had been an active serial killer for four months and had already killed 5 victims. Typically, his victims were strangers he encountered during his travels as a truck driver, and his crimes spanned Oregon, Ohio, and New Jersey. In each case, Fautenberry would meet and befriend these individuals during his travels, and then subsequently kill them.

- Before leaving to Alaska, Fautenberry claimed the life of Joseph Daron Jr. in Ohio and stole his car. With this vehicle, Fautenberry then drove to Seattle, purchased his one-way ticket to Alaska, and left the stolen car behind.

- After meeting Jeff Diffee at the local Juneau bar, the man would invite him back to his apartment because he felt sorry that Fautenberry wasn’t yet accustomed to the Alaskan wilderness. However, after the pair arrived and Fautenberry took his life, Fautenberry stole Diffee’s wallet and would withdraw $400 from his bank account on the following day. This withdrawal was noticed by authorities, and they used the information to help track Fautenberry down.
