I'm a ballet dancer, and I love this channel. In ballet class, we do about half of barre before stretching. Plies, tends, degages, and rond de jambes help to warm up our feet and legs before we stretch. If you would like a challenging warmup and stretch, try a ballet class!

Just recently stumbled upon your shorts and they've been very encouraging! I hope to start making a habit of little exercises, thanks <3

There's a body builder at my gym. In winter, he always goes into the sauna for 10 minutes before working out. I used to think it would be detrimental to his workouts but it's the opposite. Now, I do it also.

You have encouraged me to start getting more flexible and I’m so grateful. I’m in less pain and my cat thinks it’s hilarious. My goal is to one day be able to do that weird stretch on one leg where you go down to the ground without touching

Raising your body temperature isn't really what warming is about. From a Reddit post I saw: No. Warming up is a colloquial term. It depends a lot on what you want to get ready to do, and what you want to lower risk from.

If you are warming up for a run, then some of it has to do with the chemical chain of fuel that you activate. When you run you don’t immediately use fuel from your liver, you use fuel that’s already in the cell. It takes 5+ minutes of going through various fuel repositories before you are using a glucose from your blood and blood oxygen. So warming up means getting up to that state of “fuel cycle.” But then the other half is non muscle soft tissue. There’s no circulatory system in your ligaments and tendons, they are serviced only through mechanical movement (or slow pressure exchange). So your knee ligaments for example get fluid exchanged when you use your knee and the ligament is being torqued. That’s one reason it takes so many days for tendons and ligaments to repair workout soft damage (28+) compared to a muscle (1-2). No circulatory system. And in runnings case some of it refers to central nervous system preparation. Your brain doesn’t have perfect instant reaction to a movement, in terms of which muscles it contracts. For example if I deadlift straight away my max versus if I deadlift my way up to my max. I’m more prone to injury because I haven’t rehearsed the movement at a lower weight and gotten my brain to “remember” to stabilize my spine etc.

So warming up has really nothing to do with temperature. (Often a side effect of a warm up though).

For warming up before stretching, if your goal is to reduce injury, then just start out with active stretching: clench muscle, release muscle, clench muscle, release muscle. Time it with your in breath and out breath for example. That’s more or less the same as weightlifting and is a good way to make sure your muscle has been loaded at least once by your centra nervous system and then you can work against the clench reflex.

However if your goal is to improve your gains and do some warmup that readies you to get farther than before, I have no idea. You need a stretching expert. Maybe a heat application does help!! :)

Hey David! I've been watching you for a while - was wondering if you could make a video about back extension pain and how to deal with it. I had a disc bulge about a year ago, and spinal extension (like bridges, walkovers etc) still hurt, so I usually try to skip them..
