It is a nice idea but in many cases that is not enough. Even with a top 3 position the range of that can be limited by things like high ranking competitors between your location and a desired client base. Distance is still the number one factor. A GBP optimized perfectly is not going to beat a competitor that is closer and is also spending money on SEO (maybe more) and also has a highly optimized GBP. A service company should always do SEO including a well done GBP but keep a multi basket approach. Like: Google Ads, Google LSA, GBP (SEO), Bing, Yelp (in some cases).
