Great PSA. Unfortunately we get a lot of “hacks gone wrong” as an esthetician and it can be so easily avoided. There are so many different trends that come and go that absolutely should not be “tried out” for this exact reason.

I agree !!! I ruined my clear glowing skin in the exact same way and I still regret to this day. These pimples aren’t going anywhere !😭

For healthy skin, here's what worked for me: First thing in the morning, start by properly cleansing your face. Use mild gentle face wash only like I use riceberrry facewash of littleexttra and then follow with moisturizing your face. Riceberry has antioxidants which protects my skin from free radicals and thus prevents aging. Do not overcleanse your face. Only cleanse it in the morning and before bed. Ensure to moisturize your face throughout the day. Also, don't neglect sunscreen, even indoors. Dry skin exposed to the sun can lead to white patches on the skin. Therefore, it's important to keep your skin hydrated and shield it from excessive sun exposure.

When you are shaving your face, they say to do it dry, but DO NOT. That is literally the worst thing for your skin. We shave our legs wet, our arms (if you shave there) and our face should be the same. Use warm water first, use a gentle cleanser like cetaphil as a film, and then use gentle strokes with the razor.

Shaving dry can be highly irritating to the skin. And you are only supposed to do it once every 4 weeks. My skin always comes out smooth and stays clear. Also make sure you wash your face afterwards again with the same cleanser, and then use something like micellar water to remove extra dirt. I usually use baby lotion for a moisturizer. And that’s it. No harsh chemicals, nothing to clog my pores. It’s been working for me.

I don’t think it’s the dermaplaning, it might be the makeup right after. I would never run a blade on the top layer of my skin and put make up right after. I usually do this at night and put gentle and hydrating moisturiser right after and let the skin heal all night before harsh products or sunlight exposure.

Edit: I am not saying that it’s never dermaplaning. I am saying just in this case the reason for the reaction might be the makeup.

Finally someone spoke out. Some of these influencers swears and say stuff like we are missing out by not shaving but i saw instantly that when i did it my skin got so irritated.

That happened to me too! I've never really had many spots anywhere except on my forehead, and after I shaved my face one or twice my cheeks were covered in irritation and bumps 😭 It's taken long to clear up but it's back to normal now

Points to remember if you decided to shave your face:
1. Make sure your blade is clean
2. Use a clean cloth to wipe the hairs off your blade
3. Wash your face and hands before shaving
4. After shaving, use a toner or any product (I'm dumb) u have to wipe your face.
5. Moisturise your face well.
Remember cleanliness is a necessity.

What happened is the you also removed the top layers of skin and was more exposed to the elements and bacteria. You didn't have protection over your skin or time to heal in a sanitary way. Exfoliation requires you to be very careful and keep your skin clean and moisturized to create a protective barrier. Putting makeup after and bacteria mixed with oil, product just congested your hair follicle and infected your skin. And if your tried drying skin products to kill bacteria without hydrating your skin produced more oils to make up for the dryness. Healing, calming and hydrating products would help more. You may have gone to heavy with the blade as well, causing extra damage. do not try at home. Even as an esthetician, I had other technicians do exfoliating treatments on me.

a few tips that Iv'e learnt from doing it quite a few times:
1. don't put makeup on for a whole day after shaving your face
2. use a clean blade every time
3. moisturise as your shaving and moisturise HEAVILY after
4. don't use any acids serums or lots of skincare after, keep it simple with just a moisturiser (I use the Neutrogena hydro-boost water gel)
5. do NOT shave over acne. Be very careful when shaving over acne or even acne scars, it can cause you to break out more and can make your acne much worse
Just a few tips but just remember if you are shaving your face you are heavily exfoliating your skin to the point that it will become very sensitive. Be careful with your skin after and make sure to hydrate!!

I'm not sure about derma planing but I've been shaving my face for 4 years and my skin has never felt better. It glows, definitely helps when you apply skincare and No, hair does NOT grow back thick (it may work different for different people)
This is how i do it,
Gentle skin cleanser
Foaming cleanser
I apply a Thick layer of aloevera gel and then shave
Wipe off using toner (I use rose hydrosol)
Moisturize with Saffron based moisturizer

I do this at night and leave overnight followed by sunscreen as usual everyday and no makeup for the next 10-15 hours.
Works like a charm ✨

Note : I'm just sharing my experience it may react differently if u have hormonal issues etc..

Remember that everyone has different skin flora, essentially your natural skin bacteria. Some can be opportunistic and cause infections and acne outbreaks. Always remember to disinfect any tools you use that touch your skin prior to use.

I did this same thing and I found that putting on makeup right after shaving can cause this. When you shave your face you are essentially creating micro cuts in the skin and makeup getting into that can cause breakouts. You have to leave your skin alone for at least a day or so before putting on makeup.

Also I learned from the 1990s not to pluck my eyebrows because now I want those big gorgeous eyebrows I plucked out and never grew back!

Yes it's true, it does not suit me. First few days it feels smooth and even and then it gets all bumpy. I would never touch razor😢

Tip I learned, don’t do this on a dry face. Buy aloe gel, smear that on the areas of your face you’re going to shave and then have at it. Your face is freaking out because it’s not used to being hairless and receiving this type of heavy exfoliation. The sebum on your face wants to over produce to compensate for it, thus causing acne. So Using aloe will keep moisture to your face while doing this procedure and then after add a hyaluronic acid serum.

Aftershave works well after dermaplanning to prevent infection like this. Putting makeup onto a freshly shaved face clogs the pores and allows bacteria to be trapped beneath it.

I never had acne in my life but at the age of 28…I got really bad acne and it lasted for 2 years. It ruined my face completely. I had dark spots and deep scars… I feel so sad when I look in the mirror 😔

This exact same thing happened to me.
After a lot of examining I found that when I shave my hair it's all right. But when it grows back and I wash my face or apply skin care, it pushes the hair back and forth thus causing irritation and red very itchy bumps. So I stopped shaving my face and my skin is all good again.
