Can you relate? - lesson 25 ADHD Life Lessons I Wish Someone Told Me After Getting diagnosed 25/50

If you have ADHD you will often freak when your clothes are too scratchy, too tight or make you feel hot because your brain cannot shut off that feeling. It’s like when it happens you just want to impulsively rip those clothes off your skin to feel free again and even though this may seem like a minor issue, when you’re out and about it, can completely invringe on your mental well being, causing you to be even more distracted, loose your cool more easily and just drive you crazy. This is when I learned about the link between ADHD and sensitivity to touch and how to live a life tailored to me. I realized that if you have ADHD, comfort is more important than following any short-lived fashion trend and that soft, light weight, breathable clothes made out of cotton, or soft wool are what I need to wear to help me have calm and relaxed days and so I now stay away from rougher fabrics like denim and priortize clothes that actually feel good, which has made an incredible difference for how much more at ease and focused I am, throughout my day-to-day.

Lesson 25: Prioritize comfortable materials

Im an SLT with ADHD and I work with so many neurodivergent kids ADHD, AuDHD, Autistic etc who get labelled far too often as being “disruptive” or “challenging” or “argumentative” and are being subjected daily to itchy school uniforms that will obviously further aggravate their sensory sensitivity, diminish their focus and increase irritability. I’m exhausted by having the daily conversation explaining this link but I will continue on because the kids are worth it. ❤

I think this is actually more important to tell parents. As an adult I buy whatever I want and stay away from uncomfortable clothes however I remember many awful experiences with clothes my parents picked out telling me to not make a scene because of it.

This channel may have literally changed my life.
For decades I’ve wondered what’s wrong with me and every video I watch, I completely identify with.

This hits me right in the heart.
Growing up i have never been fond of collared shirts, long sleeves or sweaters in general. Even normal buttoned shirts make uncomfortable and my wardrobe is literally full off short sleeved T Shirts with low collar.

Even if my parents bought me shiny new clothes if its uncomfortable I never touch it for years, parents were annoyed by this.

This is so true. I also take off all the clothing tags.

I'm 62 and am beginning to believe I have ADHD. The whole clothing issue goes back to my childhood. As a teenager I suffered severe headaches that were not migraines. (I had those later in life.)

I saw a neurologist who eventually decided I was a perfectionist with OCD tendencies and would always suffer from debilitating headaches until I learned to be less perfectionistic. He came to this conclusion because I had my shirt sleeves rolled up exactly the same on both arms.

A few years later I ended up working on the neuro floor of the hospital where he saw patients. It always made me laugh because he would have his coffee just so, sit in the same chair at the desk just so, ask for the charts in the same order -- by room number.

I wanted to ask him if he had OCD but I was pretty sure he had no idea who I was.

The same goes for my sheets.

I cannot have hot clothes. I would rather be freezing.

This is just good advice period. I'd recommend everyone to wear comfortable clothes made of stuff like soft cotton or linen. Studies do show that in hospitals, patients that wore more comfortable and 100 % linen and cotton clothes recovered faster than patients that wore things like synthetic or polyester clothes. So it's also good for your health as well.

Wow this just about made me cry. I have alot of weird things with clothes and when I find something I like I’ll wear it to death bc I know it’s not going to bother me. I NEVER knew this was related to my ADHD!! I just thought I was so neurotic or I chalked it up to anxiety. Thank you for helping me better understand myself. ❤

Man, that's so frustrating for me!
Especially at school we have a strict uniform code which makes my ADHD symptoms worse and that makes it soo hard to go to school. I still remember one day after finishing classes for that day, I started crying hysterically and ripped all the uniform off because of the anger that has been built inside of me. Now I almost always skip classes.
It makes me so mad how people are still not educated on this field and fail to understand that mental health IS NOT FOR ATTENTION SEEKING!!

I hate wearing jeans. I like to wear long flowy skirts and dresses, people think I’m dressing up. They think I’m crazy when I say I’m not dressing up I just hate jeans.

Dude I’m 31 and got diagnosed 6 months ago…. Everything in your 50 series I now see exactly how I’ve been living with this and not knowing for my whole life! Thank you for making it so simple for my easily distracted brain to comprehend! Love your channel, you’re a massive help!

I tried explaining it to someone and all I could get out was that the discomfort is "SO loud". Like a radio turned all the way up, I can't feel, hear or think of anything else - which is cool when you *want* that but not against your will.

I finally went through my closet this last year and threw away all the fabric that was itchy scratchy had elastic around the elbows. It was annoying me, and started doing the same thing you just said, and life is so much better.

This is such a huge part of my life, for as long as I can remember! I once ripped off an uncomfortable skirt after school and never wore it again. Now I buy only soft clothes in natural fabrics. Life’s too short for the alternative.

When I was a kid getting ready for school in the morning, I would often hit a wall trying to put my shoes on. The feeling of my toes not laying right, the socks wrinkling or bunching up, would drive me MAD. I would put my shoes on, take them off and readjust, get my foot halfway in, pull it out cuz it feels all wrong, and on and on. Would usually end in me crying in frustration. I was late…a lot.

I'm diagnosed with adhd but also autism, so I totally get it. Wearing something even slightly uncomfortable will ruin my whole day, my sensory issues can be triggered really easily
