Can you relate? - lesson 27

ADHD Life Lessons I wish someone told me after getting diagnosed, number 27/50

If you have ADHD you will often look for quick dopamine by annoying people, eating lots of fast and sugary foods or driving a bit too fast, **which/because it** helps get you into a focused and engaged state in the short-term, but can lead to a way more dangerous and unpredictable lifestyle in the long-term because even though you feel like you NEED TO DO these things to function they are often quite risky and affect your health, **but you don’t see a way out because you’re brains craving is constantly there.**

This is when I learned about the best way to increase my dopamine naturally, all the while boosting my health in the process. I realized that the right kind of exercise - the kind you enjoy - can naturally boost your energy and focus levels for hours and that you don’t need to have big gym sessions to get these effects. Going for a short run, doing push ups or just taking the stairs before meetings is now a daily ritual that that has led to a more stable and successful life, all the while building a present mind and healthy body.

"The right kind of exercise, the kind you enjoy."
Ahh, see, that's my problem right there.

I grew up unmedicated in an ADHD family, on top of being autistic. With that, I got a mom who had dopamine hacks. I craze comfort foods that take time and effort, so the prep builds dopamine and momentum to get other stuff done while it's in the waiting phase (sourdough bread baking is today). Ordering and arranging actually helps me calm and focus, so I have tasks that have to get done at regular intervals that include that. I share my space with interactive companions so I don't feel like I'm talking to myself (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, fish and plants) while also giving myself ways to get dopamine that benefit them (slow watering of house plants using aquarium water, grooming and feeding, having to move to take the aquarium water to the outside plants). My ADHD symptoms are profound and there are times I definitely feel it more than others. My dogs force me into reality at times, especially my 15y/o pit/chow who has seen this for all of those 15yrs. No matter what I put in place, I struggle, but I'm trying, which is still doing something and is the best I have

I became a problem solver and auditor at work, it keeps me moving around to different people and constantly looking through the computer to fix issues. I'm so glad they let me do that job, it helps so much more than standing still trying to process things. ❤

So true! I used to drive very fast (until moving to Seattle made that an impossibility due to their very very slow driving), and additional examples; yet, dancing, rollerblading, canyoneering, pickleball, ...the list is long- definitely helped me to be healthier. The downside is that it doesn't seem easy to find others who also enjoy activities...

so wonderful that you have found a way to a satisfying life.
some of us are our own worst enemy, even when we know better and appear to be unable to even try.

Little bursts like stairs, one flight or two, gets rid of stress, surprisingly.
I walk to ease stress, I try to walk in nature paths.

You always say things that you were told AFTER being diagnosed but I wish I had more knowledge BEFORE getting diagnosed because I really had no idea that all my little ‘eccentricities’ were signs of ADHD and I could have got help a LOT sooner!

3 ankle surgeries and 10 knee surgeries I don't take stairs nowhere. I enjoy spending time outside with my four-legged ones.

Yes! I’ve learned to just force myself to take a walk and dance around the house to get my mind on track so I can focus more on what I need to do and feel more confident while doing it!

Being adhd and saudi women is double the problem, i exercise with my abayahh its heavy, uncomfortable, if i want to ride a bicycle i would go to remote place to enjoy it ughhhh guys no matter how hard is life for as adhd, just keep it keep pumping dopamine naturally or your life will be messy, i hate exercise in my home no enough stimulating, i got to malls and bring no money because i know i will buy stuff 😂😂 i bring only water and take Stairs no elevators

Fitness had helped me big. Walking in nature, too. Otherwise, I fail into the small traps that lead me nowhere. Fortunately, I am not the kind of poking people😂 I deeply dislike it.

This explains why my friend group and I, who all have ADHD, have entered into a very active prank war. It's a great rush!

Thankyou for this, I used to be really into the gym and exercise but after a year of burnout I can’t keep a consistent schedule with it. I want to get back to it and while I know it’s better in the long term, I’m not quite there yet. We’re taking baby steps! Small doable, enjoyable things is what I’m aiming for right now and having a little dance is perfect.
