Can you relate? - lesson 24

ADHD Life Lessons I Wish Someone Told me after getting diagnosed 24/50

If you have ADHD you will always be on the search for more stimulating things because everytime you start something new your brain gets a heavy hit of dopamine. You switch jobs more often, feel a constant urge to travel always thinking, this will now finally be it which makes your life very volatile and unpredictable for the people you know and usually this search for novelty simply repeats leading you to question yourself and wonder if it will ever be enough

This is when I discovered the the link between novelty and gratitude and how to us it to find what my ADHD brain was looking for. I learned that being grateful doesn’t only lead to appreciating what you have but also helps to discover existing novetly. **Be it the dimples on your partners face when they smile or feeling the texture of leaves from the tree in your favorite park, it turns out that, once you put your phone down, there is novelty everywhere around you and that you would have likely also seen it that way, if you were still a kid.** While I still travel and switch up what I do, **regular meditation and mindful moments, have now trained my brain to give me more dopamine for free, with less consequences.**

Lesson 24: Find novelty through gratitude

My story: I am 66 and have always knew I most likely had ADHD. My brother has and was diagnosed in his forties and is now 76. I remember asking doctors and I always dismissed. About 4 years ago I finally got a therapist and she asked me if I had ADHD. I got diagnosed and got meds and my life has changed for the better! So I am a late bloomer now 😅and understand why I have struggled so much with things. Your videos are amazing and I’m learning so much and yeah I do all things you do. Thank you for sharing you are helping so many people . ❤

I work hard to not be, as Gramma described me as a kid : a loose newspaper in a high wind. I still cycle hobies often. BUT, I just passed the 7 yr mark at my job. Never made it past 7 before. 😅

Really used to impact my relationships/ability to commit to anything/anyone long term due to constantly chasing the novelty. Totally agree that gratitude and mindfulness are key.

Thank you for your videos I really find they are resonating with me.

I used to touch the leaves when I walked in the park. My friend asked why I am doing that. I said I like the texture of the leaves. He looked perplexed. I guess it is not what the neurotypical people do.

I can't believe how often you describe life as I have experienced it as an undiagnosed adult - it wasn't a recognised mode when I was a kid. You are creating really helpful videos. There is an explanation for the struggles and crashes. Thank you

So very true about embracing the novelty. Greatly enjoying the fall colors, the windy weather, rollerblading in the crisp fall weather at midnight lol. It's important to enjoy the moments.
Thank you for sharing :)
Perhaps I'm in denial, yet I have embraced the drive to travel (One international trip a year), job changes (usually annual), seeking adventure and newness, constant transitions... I'm perfectly okay with this. As a career nanny, my resume still looks great even with so many changes, and I do what I love, children are amazingly inspirational in teaching to enjoy the novelty. It's perfectly fine not to be mainstream. The world is meant to be explored, and it's a good era for exploration.

This concept has meant a lot to me... The movie Soul made me cry because I could finally express to my husband what it's like to see the world this way.

Yo, just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do bro. Your videos lead me to me reading faster than normal by Peter Shankman and getting properly diagnosed. Long story short, much love ❤❤

Very true. I'd also like to add that it can make you blame yourself when it's not enough and it can make you very depressed, while really it's not even that big of a deal. Our brains are (more than normal) hungry for dopamine and there's so many ways to lead a satisfying life.

The traveling part is not me. I don't like a lot of people so I tend to be by myself or with the very few friends I do have.
