Sumo bars should be smaller, this would prevent athletes from opening their legs so much, this is not a Sumo Deadlift this is a Deadlift Split!

My hand position is a bit unusual. I sumo deadlift and start with my hands barely inside my shins.

When I am at lockout, my hands are completely outside of my legs. It is much easier to get my shoulders through if my hands and forearms are not laying against my thighs.

Sure, as Matt says, I lose the shortened range of motion that comes with the bend on the bar with narrow grip, but since I am deadlifting less than 600 and use a stiff bar, the narrow grip would not shorten the range of motion very much and I like benefit that wide grip width has on my lockout.

So what's a way to find that ideal grip for sumo ? I personally sent up, brace, and "sink" towards the bar. I do still have the hands hitting the thigh problem. I think it's just how I'm built tbh.

Did the judges allow your sumo grind or did they red light for hitching? You weren't hitching, but there looked to be a downward motion of the bar, so it wouldn't surprise me if they redlighted it.

Do you think it gets stuck on your thighs more cuz of mixed grip? I'd imagine hook grip you don't have as much of an issue with it
