Matt, I lost a PR attempt in the shower due to grip issues.

Any tips?

I recently built up enough strength to pull 315 with over hand grip I think what’s helped me most with grip strength is holding deadlifts at the top with over hand grip till failure also heavy dumbbell exercises like split squats and shrugs work the forearms really well

I would use Farmers Carry and Suitcase carry. I leave deadlifts just for my posterior chain. I would not let grip be the weak point during deadlift workouts

nothing is worst than failing a pr to plug failure

Matt, I'd love to see a video with you maxing double overhand deadlift so we can compare it to the power of hook grip.

I do farmer carries with heavy kettle bells for grip strength

I got from not being able to deadlift more than 120kg without straps to a 185kg PR with no straps was: dead hangs (hands chalked) supersetted with forearm curls and reverse curls. I did that 2 times a week for a month and it improved my grip strength exponentially. Would 100% recommend at the end of your leg workout (so the forearms aren't toasted).

I bought a set of adjustable grip sizes for my barbell, they have been my favorite toy for improving my grip for lifting

If you can stand it, hook grip is always a boost. But the main reason to just be specific with this, imo, is that you don't even need a strong grip to hold on to a deadlift unless you have either tiny or fat hands. Most people never get even remotely close to their grip potential, so there's no reason to complicate things trying to optimise grip work. Just keep it simple and save some time.

The fastest way to improve grip strength is to train Weighted Squat Plug Insertions. You can start with low volume, going for about 3 sets of 12 with low intensity twice a week, but over time you should work your way over to doing heavy insertions with a girthy plug. The girthier it is, the more of a weighted stretch you will feel at the top.

Farmers carry and dead hangs are very useful in building grip strength and endurance. You can use Fat Gripz on both as well, I use them on my farmers carries. Axle bar deadlift will also help too. You can use all these types of exercises while still using straps on your Deadlifts and the others as accessory work (no straps) and your grip will soon catch up and you may not utilize straps near as often. 💯

Also can do exaggerating shrugs with lots of weight for a movement that requires constant gripping. I always was able to gain grip strength quickly like that.

Your rest between sets should be holding the deadlift at the top for 2 minutes. Then do your next set and repeat until the sun rises. Then go to work.

Unfortunately the squat plug doesn't help with grip :(

For me I like to do pullups and dead hangs to work grip.

The way that guy phrased the question it seemed like perhaps he wasn’t using chalk and even mixed or hook grip to begin with

In competition are you allowed lifting straps?
