If you're looking to improve your general fitness in terms of strength, endurance, mobility and body composition, you really only need these 3 exercises. It's not that you should only use these 3 and never do anything else - that would be ridiculous - but the foundation of your training and physique and be built entirely on these 3 movements. Add in isolation work as necessary.

It's much better when you keep it simple. I used to use all the complex gym equipment, but changed to outdoor body weight training a few years back. Love it, even in the cold weather.

So glad to hear a trainer keeping it simple. Thank you.

Haven't been in a gym in 8 years and my workout is those basic 3 plus some ab work and light running. Simple, cheap, fast and very effective.

Push pull legs should be a foundation to most programs and many more would reach their goals with this approach. Full body 2-3x a week will fit peoples lifestyles more easily, allowing more people to get health and fit . Great advice

For someone who doesn’t like to exercise, this is refreshing.

The only thing that I would add is a hinge movement; I like kettlebell swings for that. I've reduced my strength training routine down to just pushup variations, pullup variations, squat variations, and the kettlebell swing.

I've thought this for a long time. Good to hear it voiced by a expert. When I was a kid people didn't go to a gym unless they were a footballer or boxer. I'm talking about the 1970's, before the bodybuilding boom in the late 80's, so I would train at home doing basically this. I added sit-ups and calve raisers and eventually bought some ten pound dumbbells and taught myself how to train with very little.

I like how you acknowledge where you gained your knowledge. You're awesome.

This is basically my approach to some degree. 37, had a few injuries (managed to avoid surgery) and don’t particularly want any more at this stage, so it’s just about keeping pain free and somewhat fit for me. Those three basics, carries, some band isolation stuff, walking and running is basically my routine.

Kyle's channel is top-notch. As is yours. Hope both your channels grow exponentially!

Thanks for this! I’m feeling a bit burnt out and jaded by my long routine… now on a relative break from work, I think I’ll stick to a 3 exercise routine with whatever variation I feel like on the day.

I agree the push, pull, squats method is great. I just add one more thing to the cycle and that's ruck march PT with 45#. I learned a lot from the GoRuck Tough challenge I went to.

I'm hindsight, he's absolutely right. These are the main 3 exercises for the whole body which also targets the core and keeps one always in shape regardless.

My family has a history of low-back problems, so I've always liked to include something to keep that strong. My current favorite is picking up and carrying awkward chunks of oak tree (I'm slowly cutting up a massive tree that fell on my land).
