Here's a tip on un-cupping boards. You want to wet the cupped-up side with a sponge. Keep it wet for a few hours or even days and the moisture will expand the grain on moist side essentially undoing the cup. Another option is if the boards are green is to place them cup-down under the sun for a few hours. Again the idea is the sun dries the top side shrinking the grain and undoing the cup. You can even combine these two and it will work even better. I've done this with many species of wood. It even works on plywood. Good luck!

Hi Richard, another way to resaw a wide board like that is to make a few passes on the tablesaw first with the blade up about 1-1/2 deep then take it back to the bandsaw to complete the resaw. The kerfs made with the tablesaw gives the bandsaw blade a place to track itself and the cuts will be more accurate.

I hv that saw corded! I am a finish carpenter/ contractor and do a ton of cabinets & built in, crown, base and I love that saw! I run a chop master blade I just got tired of buying cheap painted blades! It’s been two yrs since I sharpen that blade! I cut a lot of wood brother! Loose the painted blade! I send mine in to be sharpen to a professional place available to u also! Let me know if you want the information!

Battery operated tools come in handy at times but I’m just old school and want my cord and my power. It may take a little longer to string a drop cord to where you need to be but I don’t have to worry about my battery dying in the middle of something. I’m certainly never buying a miter box or tablesaw that is battery powered. The only tools that I own that are battery powered are my drills and impacts.

You could plane the boards to the same thickness, then laminate them onto some plywood. If you span the plywood across the bookmatch joint the entire 28' piece would act like a single plank, plus you'd have enough thickness to miter and use biscuits or dominoes. It would also be easier to control how tight the bookmatch joint is.

Richard you are such an artisan and a very clever, innovative craftsman! I’m excited to see this project come together. I hope that this home is your and Ashley’s forever home.

BTW, for some reason YT quit giving me the notifications on your uploads about 3 months ago. I had a lot of fun yesterday catching up. 😉

When you re-saw you are creating a book match pattern, however you are pivoting one board 180 degrees and placing it end to end. Also, when re-sawing don't use the fence like you were, have
that green pivot guide attached to the fence and to the left and 1/4" in front of the blade. That
allows you to steer the board left or right for a uniform thickness. Use at least a 1" wide re-saw
blade with the fewest gullets and have same in/out feed work roller supports.

Fascinating project, Richard! I love watching how your mind works to think through these creative solutions to tricky problems. You mentioned your custom-made fence on your saw - will you share a link, please?

I am very happy with the corded version of the Makita 12" Miter saw. Couldn't be happier. In fact, I got mine because I saw the video of yours but couldn't afford the battery one.

You don’t have to buy 16 footers to make 18. 10 footers are cheaper and very little waste left.

Having resawn boards I found that there was some movement and cupping as any remaining moisture dries. Next time I will resaw thicker, let the wood do what it will, and then surface and thickness plane to the desired thickness.

Ruff and tuff. That’s gonna look amazing Richard

The band saw likely wandered because the fence is not aligned with the blade. Use an alignment tool such as the Carter FAST. Additionally, resawing creates a lot of sawdust which can clog the tooth gullet. Use a 1 or 2 tpi blade with a deep gullet.

To successfully resaw boards of that size will require three to four roller supports, high tension on a new blade, two feather boards (high ones similar to what you have) and most likely a higher auxiliary fence which is angled to a properly tracking blade. If you add up, what it will cost you to have someone else do the work you will see that you will be hundreds of dollars ahead if you buy the right stuff and take the time to do it right yourself.
