Can you touch your toes? It may not be hamstring tightness holding you back!
.
Shout out @priyanka_jumps for the opening stitched video!

Dude your videos are actually changing my life. I’m young, early twenties but have had many injuries especially to my back. I really wish youtube would i allow me to make a folder so i could bookmark and sort your content but i write down your the exercises that help most and have been incorporating them into my workouts/ daily live! I was at a physical therapist a couple weeks who actually mentioned you as well haha. Thanks man

I experienced this just last week.

It's at least 10 years ago (mid 20s) that I was fairly flexible. Being able to do side splits. But I never came close to doing the middle splits. The last 10 years I didn't do much stretching and no splits.

But I found a video how you could test, if you are anatomically able to do it. And the result was: I could. So I was curious where I was at with the middle splits. I warmed up with a beginner routine I found on here as well. The nerve issue was also mentioned. (I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I worked a lot on my mental health the last year and that included working on my nervous system.)

The surprising result was that after the warm up I was almost able to get into the middle splits all the way on my first try. At 35 I did something I was not able to do as a child or teenager or young adult.

Muscles: Yeah, we can do it.

Brain: Hmm... lemme get a little more proof.

Nerves: Nah, you can't do this.

Or just in general just move to get your mobility going before you stretch. Stretching in the morning is alot tougher than throughout the day for a reason.

I’m actually going to slightly disagree on this. Dorsiflexing the foot does indeed lengthen the posterior-chain tissue/muscle fibers.

This nerve thing is what happens to me!!! On top of that, my legs fall asleep when I try to stretch my hamstrings. Thank you so much for explaining why!

As a bloke, I can do this without the knee bend. I like to stand with my feet on my hands so I can pull my upper body down for a better stretch. If you want flexibility, you've gotta work on it.

My biggest piece of advice would be to do big stretches and reps of stretching AFTER your workouts/exercise. If you do it cold then you're not going to get the same effects, and you increase the likelihood of overstretching accidentally. If you warm everything up first then it'll be much easier to get more into a stretch without as much risk, AND if you warm up first I've found that the nerves are naturally less of a problem. I've had issues with tight nerves before, and stretching them after a workout has helped me.

To each their own though, probably won't work for absolutely everyone.

Can't wait to try this! No one else ever understood and it's been this was for decades I even failed the thing where you put your feet/legs in a box and try to touch your toes during the presidential fitness test in school. TYSMIA.
