With 30 years of automotive industry experience, our founder Dwayne Saunders recognized the need for providing auto repair through a different lens. After a brief trial-and-error business model, he opened Genuine Automotive & Diesel in Austin, Texas, in 2019. The concept of superior auto services and repairs and real customer care makes perfect sense to us, but it was so novel to our local clientele that customers voted to include “genuine” in the shop’s name. You’ll find us at 16501 Bratton Lane Bldg. 2, Suite A, Austin, TX 78728. We welcome walk-ins Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. To ensure quick access to a service/repair appointment, you can reserve your time using our online scheduler or by calling us at (512) 866-0212.

I don't have time to warmup my car at 7:62am when i have to be at work at 8am.

Don't forget that idling doesn't warm up the transmission much, so drive it gently for a few minutes especially in cold weather.

You can achieve the same thing by driving gently for the first few miles. Never push your vehicle hard before it reaches full operating temp.

Good thing I take a minute to pick out a podcast to listen to while I drive.

As a technician of 23 years, 10 seconds in the summer, 30 seconds in the winter is all you need.

I let the oil pressure buildup then I’m gone. Best way to warm it up is to drive it easy.

I can sit in my truck and listen to the changes it goes through as it warms. The warmer she gets the better she sounds

Also heres a tip for the winter. Turn the heater fan off when starting the car and leave it off until the needle moves to about halfway to the quarter mark on the gauge. The car gets warm faster.

Once the idle comes down its warmed up. It's better not to hammer it right away if anything.

Never idle your engine to warm it up. Start the car, put your seat belt on, then drive gently for a couple of minutes to warm it up. The reason is simple. Fuel burns inefficiently below operating temperature and will cause soot. You want to reach normal operating temp as soon as possible without high revs. Idling takes a long time to reach that temperature, so you are causing heavy carbon build up

I always wait for the cold engine light in my Honda City to turns off before i start driving. Already 10 years and the engine still rocks.

The best way to warm up your engine is to drive it gently till it reaches normal operating temp then let it rip

It’s okay to start driving before it warms up but drive it easy don’t drive like you’re in a rush. ✅

Think of it like this
Would you start sprinting as soon as you woke up? Maybe you can but it’s gonna hurt
Take it easy let it idle for a few seconds

I remember some girl I was going on a date with laughing at me because I was warming up my car for a minute. She thought I was old school and acting like her dad.

With modern cars, you can drive it normally when cold, but you should wait till it’s warm before driving it hard.

EDIT: Here’s some additional facts:

•You do not have to wait for modern cars to warm up like you would for old cars. What you’re waiting for is for fluids to fully circulate the engine. In today’s cars, that happens within a few seconds.

•It only takes maybe about 5 ish minutes of normal driving for your car’s engine to warm up to operating temperature.

Oil completes its path by the time you click the seatbelt.... let it warm up by not beating the piss outa it for a few mins

Uniform expansion of the engine during its heat cycle is the target.

This is less about the oil flowing through the motor, although that’s important, and more about heat expansion. When metal gets hot it expands. Allowing your car to slowly come up to operating temp controls this expansion, giving your motor the healthiest life.

If you were to get in your car and immediately start to drive aggressively, this rapidly brings up the temp in your engine and transmission, causing excessive wear and tear, and in extreme cases, can cause the head or block of the motor to crack.

Instead, allow your car to idle until its rpm distinctively drops. Start your car and wait. You’ll be able to hear and see your engine’s rpm drop somewhere from 1, 100-1, 200 rpm, to around 800-900 rpm. After the drop, you can now start driving normally, as the engine is mostly warmed up, and this will allow the transmission to warm up along with it as well. Hope this was helpful!
