Eat, Fast, Lose? New book suggests alternate day fasting

Alternate day fasting is a new diet trend that suggests people switch off days of eating freely, with days of eating one 500-calorie meal. Krista Varady, author of "The Every Other Day Diet" and associate professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois, joins the "CBS This Morning" co-hosts to discuss the diet.

A little surprising to see how dismissive the reporters are. If it was so simple to simply eat right and exercise we would not have the obesity epidemic that we are dealing with in this country and many deal with world wide. Obesity and the medical problems associated with obesity is a tremendous strain on the medical resources in this country and we are all paying for it with rising health care costs. If someone has a program that they have studied for 8 years (Krista Varady) and has found great results why on earth would 2 of these 3 reports be so rude and patronizing to this woman. Why bother inviting her on the program just to offend her. I don't think they actually did their homework and look into the science behind it. I know this is an interview from 2 years ago and now there are a lot of positive reviews and people who are finding their healthy weight as a result of this diet plan. CBS should be ashamed!

They were rude to her. Too many negative questions and comments. Wow.

My fasting journey has evolved to 44/4 Alternate Day Fasting (ADF).
44 hours straight fasting, 4 hours feeding.
You won’t crave bad food or alcohol.
I feel FANTASTIC!
Mental focus too!
And the pounds MELT off incrementally on a daily basis.
I’m only 9 lbs. away from my target weight & waist numbers.
You don’t hear much about fasting, because nobody makes any money off of you eating less!
Truly a FREE, DIY weight-control lifestyle!

This isn’t an interrogation wtf? Let her talk. She’s here to explain her research, not defend herself against tax fraud allegations. No nutritionist in the world would tell their patients to never have pizza and donuts ever again. That leads to disordered eating. This was so hard to watch.

The smug reporter at the end who keeps whinging "just eat sensibly and exercise" is probably bulimic. LOL

7 years later... almost everybody knows or does IF now. So, never be too negative when hearing something not traditional and makes sense at the same time...LOL.

Reporters are not intellectuals, that's why they have prompters and people to tell them what to say and do. Intermittent fasting works and is very healthy for you.

This is probably the best weight loss method I have found. It can be used long term (unlike fasting) and it does not slow down the metabolism (unlike daily calorie restriction). It is effective and sensible and easy. Yet, very few are familiar with it.

So they invited her on the show to interrupt her? Not once was she able to complete a full sentance

Rude reporters. I can't stand CBS reporters. This is absolutely a good easy to follow option. I applaud this fine author for her hard work!

Apparently they don't know much about weight loss. Weight loss is done mainly through diet and not by hopping on the treadmill. Someone has said, "Lose weight in the kitchen and gain health in the gym."

Krista Varady's method to weight loss works. I've never felt better than I have following her advise.

Intermittent fasting is not a diet. It is an eating schedule/timetable.

It made my metabolism slow down but this way of eating reversed my insulin resistance and made me lose weight and drastically lowered my blood pressure and this is something I can realistically follow

I cant stand the faces on the reporters, the disbelief, or the know it all attitude. Why bother interview her (put the diet down) if they aren't going to really listen to the theory behind how it works? I bet its one of the easier more effective ways to lose~ yet if the press talked about some dramatic stomach surgery or strange foods diet they would be really supportive. So the press is the dysfunctional ones here.

It’s funny how people are afraid of fasting when it’s something that human beings have done since the beginning of time it’s always been feast or famine up until our modern era. food is more readily available today than any other time in our past and look at all the health issues we have! kind of interesting how they are so quick to criticize.

I get that the reporters are doubtful of the diet plan but is it just me or were each of them almost out to "get" the woman being interviewed? Think they could have been much more professional and unbiased in their interviewing of this story.

500 calories can be a huge salad with a lean protein. Also low calorie and low carb fruits and veggies. Those who have done intermittent fasting know this. I think this is a reasonable diet. It can be a lifestyle to maintain.

You slow your metabolism if you restrict calories every day. Wednesday and Sunday I dont eat anything...230 to 160 and holding at 160 for 3 years now.

I did a 500 calorie per day for about 30 days lost 21 pounds about a year later I gained the weight back simply because I went back to eating all the time and no exercise if you stick with these plans it surely will work and this video above is way safer than just doing 500 calories a day

I wish she had been able to mention how the body uses stored fat and energy on those fasting days and is able to repair itself instead of being over fed ALL the time. Two power bars..oh come on.
