These kinds of people distrust others because they use their own behavior as a base point. Since they would do certain things if they were in the position you find yourself in, they judge others due to their own grimy behavior. I remember being told by one particularly nasty individual that she had been with only 3-4 men in her entire life. Later in the relationship it comes to light that the 3-4 men in her whole life was, in reality, 3-4 men a week minimum. Talk about flabbergasted... that experience alone should have been enough for me to give up on any hope of her being able to be honest. But, being the sentimental type that I am, I just couldn't get enough of the pain and humiliation that accompanied interactions with her. I truly thought I could change her thinking and actions. Talk about being a fool? I had forgotten what was perhaps the hardest fact that I had ever learned in life. The only person one can ever truly change is oneself. Really, we usually make a mess of our own lives on occasion so what makes us think that we can control; others lives? Appreciate others for the things they do that you like and try to not concern yourself with their less likable actions. If their behavior truly upsets you? Remove yourself from their life. You will never change the other person. The most you will ever get from them is a superficial pretense of change. Just one more lie and layer of deception to deal with. Hardly worth the time and effort. Move on, you'll be glad you did. Good luck dealing with these most toxic of people. Try to remember that you mean nothing to them beyond your being a source of supply. The only thing that makes us stupid is wanting to continue any form of relationship with them.
