Most people wonder if narcissists see themselves as being narcissistic and inappropriate. Dr. Les Carter tackles this issue by focusing on what their defenses imply and how they hide behind a false self with their alternate version of reality. On one level they know they are wrong, yet on another level they believe they are the standard bearers for correctness.

According to the narcissist they are never inappropriate, but you on the other hand have some serious issues.

Love the 5 year old story…my brother and I picked the neighbor’s flowers to take our mom a bouquet ! No idea that wasn’t ok…

Being in close proximity to a narcissist is like being near a dark shadow; a void, where a real living person should be. But isn’t.

It helps to stop considering them as normal, semi-decent persons that can be reasoned with, as they are not. They are false, evil, mad, vile and they cannot be trusted.

They constantly say “ Oh I’m only joking “ after they have a temper tantrum or say off handed remarks.

Dealing with the narcissist is dealing with the devil himself.

When confronted with their wrong doing narcissists will rage immediately, at least in my experience. They think if they intimidate us it will cause guilt in us for confronting them. It also causes some people to never confront them again. Since this didn't work with me the narcissists avoided me entirely.

This can be a generational trauma passed down through family. When you point out the dysfunction, you become the outlier.

I've seen this happen so much with my narc. They know the things they say and do that are wrong, but they won't admit it! And the second you call them on their behavior they cover up by pretending they didn't say what was said or that you heard wrong! Accountability is not a narcissist's strong suit. They would rather have people think you're crazy than to admit how inappropriate they really are.

The ones I know hold firmly to their own “victimhood” to justify their inappropriateness. 🙄 That way, they don’t have to take responsibility for anything.
I find this channel helpful and reaffirming, so Thank You! 😊

They have justification for any wrong they do.

Before I ever realized my husband was a narcissist, I used to try to talk to him about things that he did that bothered me or was inappropriate discipline of our children. He always came back at me saying that he didn't see anything wrong with what he was doing and that he saw no need to change at all. Then, he would turn the conversation back at me and say that I was just trying to make him the bad guy and blame him for anything that was wrong.

They don't want to recognize their flaws. So even if they kinda realize, they will turn it towards you so they don't need to look inside.

They cover up their deceitfulness through their rage outbursts. Always something crazy and criminal going on behind the curtain when dealing with a narcissist. That is why Narcissistic Personality Disorder is known as an anti social personality disorder.

They will make every effort to blame their blunders/mistakes on someone else.
