How to Do a Proper Sit-Up | Abs Workout

I'm going to demonstrate how to do a proper sit up. So the old school sit up when you go all the way up, out the window. Those are not good for your back and the hip flexors get involved, which we don't want. So, what I'm going to teach you today is how to do the jaundice sit up. So, you're going to lie back, you're gong to bend your legs at 90 degrees. You're going to make sure your stomach is flat, flush against the ground, your rib cage down. That's the most important thing; you want to make sure there's no space between your back and the ground.

Then you're going to support your head with your hands. You're going to take a deep inhale through your nose. As you exhale you're going to come up and I like to give the analogy, as if you were deflating a balloon, that's what you want to think of your belly as, a balloon. And you're getting all that air out as hard as you can. A deep exhale out, you're going to inhale on the way back down. So, again, hands behind your head, inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth making sure everything stays flush and then lie back down. You can do that for about 10 reps, and that's how to do a proper sit-up.

This is a crunch not a sit up. Good crunch but not any kind of situp

I had so much problems with my back after doing "old-fashioned" situps! Thanks for the great tutorial :)

Guys, the "Janda Sit" which I demonstrate here is very effective because your breathing has a TON to do with a strong core. The old school "sit ups" and crunches are not only ineffective but terrible for your back. The spine is not meant to go into constant flexion and extension. Stick to the Janda sit-up and focus on your breathing! :)

This is not sit-up this is knee held crunch.

For sit-ups your legs are supposed to be down on the floor and then put your fingers behind your head and then crunch your elbows to your knees.

I guess you do not know a) the difference between a crunch and b) the proper way of doing sit-ups. Sit-ups are done with the back (in proper posture as when standing) as if it has a board with a hinge at the hips. The torso rises up to 45 degree angle (picture lifting the head of the board) and back down. Rolling during a sit-up is wrong. Yes, sit-ups, done properly, work the hip flexors, not the abs, and are not bad for the back if you put your hands under your hips.

Why is it a proper sit-up?? and how does this differ for muscles, and skeletal positions when people but the foot on the ground and bent their knees and reach their elbows or hands or chest all the way to knees??
