Thank you so much to Audible for being today's sponsor :) #ad

Andrew Huberman is an American neuroscientist and neurobiologist at Stanford University. He is well known for his morning routine and productivity tips, so I decided to try Andrew Huberman's morning routine to see if I felt a difference in my productivity. As someone who has my own 5am morning routine, I wanted to try a NEW 5am morning routine :)

Dopamine doesn't rise when we do something nice, it rises in anticipation of doing something nice. The dopamine comes before the cake :)
However, Dopamine rises post cold shower, because the cold triggers sympatic nervous system (bc your body think youre in danger), which increases noradrenalin production which again increases dopamine production.
I go winter swimming in a public pool with a sauna, and there are definitely some regulars who seem very addicted to that adrenalin and dopamine rush!

A note on intermittent fasting…people love to talk about how healthy it is, but the tests have really only been done on men. Women’s bodies work differently, and it’s not a healthy practice for women to engage in. Also…the reason that you might feel so alert in the morning doing intermittent fasting is because the lack of food (especially if you couple the empty stomach with a cup of coffee as many people do) triggers your stress hormones. So it’s similar to how in really stressful situations (like a mother lifting a car off her child, for instance) you might get a jolt of clarity that helps you think better, makes you stronger, etc. But in the long term putting that much stress on your body is not good.

The cold shower thing…. It doesn’t have to be the whole shower. You can alternate every 20-30 sec between warm and cool water, and or finish of with a cold rinse at the end to boost your circulation

I feel very similarly about cold showers I feel like it was replacing an enjoyable part of my morning routine that I look forward to showering and made it into something stressful that I dreaded.

Love how you spent your 90 min block. I was thinking about the fact that I couldn't get devotional/quiet time in and "work" b4 work. Including quiet time in 90 min block is definitely classified as focused, productive time.

Blessed 🙏🏻 I woke up. I am not sick. I have clothes to wear. I have running water. I have food to eat. Life is good. I am thankful to God.

So I’m a big fan of cold showers in the morning! Especially when I go outside for a run and get home sweaty and hot. But what I do is 1. A few drops of peppermint oil in the bottom of the shower 2. I hop in when it’s cold for 1 minute 3. I switch it to hot and enjoy a steamy pepperminty warm shower . But I still feel like I get the health benefits and energy of that cold shower.

I think these routines create more stress. Anyone with young kids know you can’t do any of these routines… but their purpose at that age is to help you not give a shit. So those little shits are actually stress relieving!😂

I understand why I feel happier living in Brazil...I take cold shower at least two times a day (its really hot) and I am exposure to sun really early (5am here its already day) I sometimes go to the beach at 7am before going to work

Dopamine does not always equals bad addiction. Normal levels of dopamine also keep our moods stable.

I love how your editing style has grown and what it currently is, Maya ❤ Well done for that cold shower, too!

I feel like this routine is impossible to do for someone who has kids who needs to get them ready in the am and can't just walk out of the house in the am for a walk and leave them home alone.

Dopamine is more for motivation/pleasure, seratonin is more happy feels. I never feel like working out but I feel good after lol I wish the dopamine kicked in like a pre-workout.

Good to see you trying Andrew Huberman's routine. I wonder whose other routines you can try.

Maybe your husband's?

Maybe the dopamine is from being *out* of the shower lol 😅 I don't know. One reason I stopped doing coldish showers occasionally was I was dreading it and needed happy things 😂

The fact that Huberman has credentials means about zip. Anyone can earn a degree by attending school. He is still just hawking his version of how to be 'whatever' junk. Do you no think if this was the 'perfect' way to be 'productive' humans would have figured this out centuries ago? I, personally, am very tired of the whole uber fit, special diet, special routine crappola that everyone seems to think you have to do be the 'prefect' you. It's all nonsense. And did you all know that Huberman himself does NOT follow his own routine? He has long been caught 'sleeping in', SMOKING, etc. To be productive looks different to each person. You don't need to follow some grifter's routine to be productive.
