How Much Water Should You Really Drink a Day? | Dr. Josh Axe

How much water should you be drinking a day? You should be drinking about 25%-50% of your body weight in ounces daily. It’s actually not about how much water you are getting but staying hydrated. Water is vital for your health.

The biggest side effects of not getting enough water can be headaches, lack of energy, weight gain, lack of cleansing and detoxification, weakened immune response, getting the cold and flu easily, or feeling lethargic. Proper hydration is so important to your overall health. To stay properly hydrated, I have four recommendations.

First, I would recommend drinking about half of your body weight in ounces a day. I would also suggest you get more fruits and vegetables in your diet, which are full of electrolytes.

Next, I would recommend consuming all-natural sea salts in your food (Himalayan salt or Celtic salt), which helps your body stay hydrated.

Lastly, I would encourage you to exercise more. Exercise can support the process of hydration because movement increases circulation, increasing electrolyte levels into your cells.

How do you feel about 'chugging' water in mornings, between meals, & before bed?
i use RO water & add about 2-4 pinches of pink Himalayan sea salt & squeeze alittle Lemon into my gallon, i guess so it added some nutrients back to the water.

+Dr. Josh Axe A year old, yet still very insightful. Thanks for helping to educate on the truth behind hydration. It's not just about what you need in a day, it's what you need right now.

What do you have to say about what Dr. Berg states in this video? He states that when we drink as much water as typically prescribed, we end up losing minerals like potassium and sodium, so we end up actually dehydrating ourselves.

Water is good and necessary, but you got to have a right dosage. Too little water can cause dehydration and too much of water can flush out electrolytes and also cause dehydration. Trust your body, it's a smart millions of years old machine which knows what it's doing, so drink when you're thirsty and you'll be fine.

It depends greatly on your diet. I eat mostly fruits and vegetables and rarely if ever drink anything. I also have very little salt in my diet. I walk a lot as well. Everything depends.

I don't even know how people can drink so much water, I had tried my best and is 4 bottles of water (2 litters) each day, is really difficult to do it. but in the other hand 4 beers could be drink really easy no problem. it's like water is really difficult to process on my system.

Thank you for this helpful information. There is only one thing that I can't understand. My grandmother, my father and my uncle (all elderly members of my father's family) all eat mostly bread and dairy products, very little vegetables and fruit (some potatoes, onions, rice and cabbage, and apples and plums in autumn), meat very rarely, they drink very little water or any liquid, and all of them are always healthy. No disease, no visits to doctors. Grandma is 93, my father is 72 and my uncle is 74. My mother's family eat a lot of meat and vegetables, they also don't drink much water or other liquid, and they live long, but have some cardiovascular diseases when elderly. My generation eats lots of vegetables and fruit, drinks lot of water and almost all of us has some kind of disease (cancer, autoimmune, etc).
