An “over sensitive” bladder can be a temporary reaction to drinking more liquid than you normally do in the day. However, if it becomes persistent or if you suffer bouts of incontinence, it’s wise to see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. Myths about what normal bladder activity should be like are aplenty, but we consult our urologist to demystify what happens with an overactive bladder.

Thank you Dr. Malik for such great and informative information. Drinking 8 glasses of water daily seemed to be in excess to me for years.

Twelve Cups ! 5 day’s a week I do a three mile run - 100 crunches - 10 sets of ten pull ups (50), hour @ LA Fitness weights. So I drink 12- 14 cups of distilled water.(no alcohol-no beer), only black coffee (distilled water). Weekend no exercise - 8 cups water.

I'm 73 y/o and have been told by GP's that seniors lose their signals to drink and therefor I must make sure I drink water during the day. I also am a type one diabetic, which I got when I was 4 year's old (69 years). So I do attempt to drink lots of water to continue to flush the kidneys which is a real concentrated chore every day.

Something that I discuss with my patients who drink water all day (and pee all night) is that their drive to drink might not be due to the body's need for water, but to mitigate a dry mouth. You and I know that dry mouth is not the same as fluid balance thirst, but most people don't know that, and there are myriad reasons for dry mouth, medication being at the top of the list. Just another conversation to have with our bottle jon

One of the biggest improvements in my quality of life in the last two years has been the simple change of ditching the idiotic practice of slamming 8+ glasses of water per day. I’m no longer running to the bathroom constantly throughout the day, and not getting up to per 4-6+ times throughout the night. I only drink water now when I am THIRSTY. And as soon as I am no longer thirsty, I stop drinking the water, even if it means putting the glass down after 1 or 2 ounces. As a result, I am sleeping better and living better. Threw out my water bottles. I do not miss them AT ALL.

I was told by my PCP to drink 8 glasses of water a day. So I drink 8 shot glasses a day! 😂 I have a friend that has 18oz ice tea glasses. He tries to drink 8 of those a day. In one of my son’s Playmobil sets, there is a plastic wine glass. Maybe I should drink 8 of those a day. The myth is very iffy also, because it uses the term “glasses” which is not a unit of measure! If such recommendation is made, it should be in ounces or liters (or ml).

Another possibly related myth is: “You should drink enough water so that your urine is clear, not yellow.” Dr. Malik, true or false? But one point of good advice is “Watch out were those Huskies go and don’t you eat that yellow snow.”

I almost never feel thirsty as have a lot of coffee, tea, milk, fruit, soups or other food with high fluid contents.
When doing sports/exercise, travelling or visiting a hot country, I consciously force myself to drink a lot as I know I need extra hydration but when at home, I don't feel thirsty from one month to next and rarely drink water and am not suffering.
There are instances I have big thirst and have to drink copious amount of water.
