My bird is a narcissist. He only comes to me when he wants me to bring him to a mirror. If I don't bring him, he flies away. He doesn't say sorry.

In this culture "everybody is":

1. A narcissist
2. In depression
3. In anxiety
4. The center of the world

A few years back I started dating someone that moved really quickly, he said all the right things, he made me feel like I was the most special person in the world but in my gut I could still feel like something was wrong. I had never heard of narcissism but I googled some of the things that I found were red flags and that’s when I found narcissism he had love bombed me and I was so addicted to him and then he would gaslight me always telling me I’m too sensitive, I’m crazy I need help. He made me feel so crazy I honestly did not want to live anymore. luckily I went to therapy to get help I did group therapy and then emdr and then I moved out of the state to get away from him because I knew that any time he would come back to me I would let him back in that’s how addicted I was to him.

Some narcissists are aware of social norms to the degree that they might fake apologise. What makes it uncanny is the fact such a person is devoid of any actual remorse or anything behind those eyes when they stare into your soul and "apologise" just to get you to do what they want as soon as possible. They can't hook you in if they never throw you a bone.. To add, usually the fakeness becomes obvious when they always add in "I'm so sorry truly... but" and shift blame onto you, every time.

There are narcissistic traits and there's the actual personality disorder. My brother in law is an overt narcissist and we haven't spoken to him in over a decade. The man can never say sorry or admit he's wrong but he expects you to bend backwards for him. He also lacks empathy and I've caught him fake crying at a funeral once. He's surrounded by people pleasers and doormats. What he's capable of actually scares me.

It's trickier in the context of relationships. Sometimes they fake apology just to hoover you. I'd say the biggest sign is abuse, doesn't matter if they apologize or not narcissists would abuse you emotionally and continue to do so regardless of all the promises to change.

Jordan Peterson must be so proud of his beautiful, intelligent daughter. I love the way she really listens to people.

Summary
1. Can someone say they're sorry? (If they can't, there's probably a chance that there's something wrong about them, but it doesn't automatically make them a narcissist.)
2. The inability to say "You're right what i did wasn't great/was selfish".
3. Can they reflect about their actions & self-aware that their actions aren't okay or hurtful.

Both my parents in a nutshell. Then people wonder why my brother and I apologize so much.

My mother used to never apologize, until as a family we pointed it out. Now in her older age, she gives out empty apologies to avoid criticism.

Narcissists say sorry all the time, it literally depends if it will serve them in an ulterior motive.

Beware people who apologize only when caught, and don't smile with their eyes.

Set some solid boundaries for yourself and once in a while say no. If the reaction is severe then the likelyhood of narcissistic personality is high.

"We have a culture that seems to diagnose everybody with narcissism..." then goes on to describe characteristics that are present in nearly EVERY non-intimate interaction in society.

Being unable to admit when they're wrong and being unable to admit any faults or problems with their personality is an immediate sign of narcissism.
