Eating 1200 calories a day - from a Dietitian

Ever pushed harder just to get worse results?

The female body is designed to be sensitive to calorie and carb intake, you restrict either too hard for too long and your metabolism and your hormones will end up in the toilet.

I’m not saying that eating less and moving more is never the answer, sometimes it is. But for a lot of women they’ve pushed that to the extreme thanks to diet culture telling you have to be perfect for results. Consistency over perfection.

This was many years ago now (literally 10 years ago) Luckily I was able to bring myself back from that - restore hormone balance, metabolism, GI health, eat intuitively and lose weight after both babies with very minimal restriction or tracking (plan to do the same with this baby). But, This is the reality of a lot of women I work with who feel stuck - like no matter what they do they can’t get the weight off and no matter how little they eat they seem to gain weight.

Sometimes you can try:

1) Backing off on hit training/excessive cardio and opting for heavy lifting.

2) Eating more calories.

3) Eating more carbs or carb cycling.

Sometimes that works immediately for my clients, sometimes we need to look a little deeper at hormone balance and other factors! Have you ever gone all in only to find you got worse results?!?!?

I will say this. If you are eating only 1200 calories a day and running 5-6 miles a day you are indeed not eating 1200 calories a day but far more. The main reason people don’t lose weight during weight loss is because they can’t properly count their calorie intake. I did a 1k calorie a day for 2 months and my metabolism didn’t mess up at all. It depends on the person sure but in reality a calorie deficit is the only way for weight loss. Plain and simple

Our ancestors literally had to be in constant famine and you think a 1200 cal a day every day will wreck your metabolism. You’re not counting your calories correctly

I believe you. I sincerely do. I’m amazed at all these people who are saying you must not have counted calories right.

Impossible people who say this don’t face the fact that they aren’t counting calories correct all the extra chipotle, ranch, bbq adds up to big calories

You're not counting properly. I'm keeping my calorie intake at 1000 or lower while doing mild exercise and I dropped 3, 5 kg (7 lbs) over approximately 2 weeks.

You should see a doctor or do better calorie counting. 1200 is starvation level intake.

I did loose 5 kg in a month and I was running everyday and doing my 1200 diet.

Sounds like you weren’t eating 1200 kcal lol. As an RD to an RD, If your total daily energy expenditure truly dropped below 1200 kcal you’re either a little person or would be bed ridden.
