Have you ever wondered why individuals who have experienced narcissistic abuse often find themselves surrounded by clutter? Join me as we delve into this intriguing connection and uncover the underlying reasons.

Narcissistic abuse can leave deep emotional scars, affecting various aspects of a person's life, including their living environment. Clutter, whether physical or emotional, often becomes a manifestation of the trauma endured. This clutter isn't just limited to physical belongings but extends to mental and emotional spaces as well.

When someone undergoes narcissistic abuse, their sense of self-worth and identity can be shattered. They may develop coping mechanisms such as hoarding or holding onto possessions as a means of regaining control or finding comfort in familiarity. This tendency to hold onto items, even those with little practical value, can result in clutter piling up over time.

Moreover, the chaotic environment created by clutter may reflect the internal turmoil experienced by survivors of narcissistic abuse. It can serve as a barrier, shielding them from confronting painful memories or emotions associated with their past trauma. Instead of facing these difficult feelings head-on, individuals may distract themselves by organizing or rearranging their clutter, providing a temporary sense of relief.

Additionally, the need for validation and approval, which is often heightened in survivors of narcissistic abuse, can contribute to the accumulation of clutter. Holding onto possessions may serve as a way to seek external validation or fill the void left by the absence of genuine emotional connections.

Furthermore, individuals who have experienced narcissistic abuse may struggle with decision-making and prioritization, leading to difficulty in decluttering their surroundings. The fear of making the wrong choice or letting go of something important can paralyze them, perpetuating the cycle of clutter.

In essence, the presence of clutter in the lives of those who have endured narcissistic abuse is not just about disorganization or messiness. It's a tangible representation of their internal struggles, a coping mechanism for dealing with past trauma, and a reflection of their need for control and validation.

If you or someone you know is struggling with clutter as a result of narcissistic abuse, know that you're not alone. Seeking support from trusted friends, family members, or mental health professionals can provide invaluable assistance on the journey to healing and decluttering both your physical and emotional spaces.

Together, let's unravel the complexities of narcissistic abuse and clutter, paving the way for healing, growth, and reclaiming of one's sense of self-worth and identity.

I divorced a narcissist. I held onto material possessions as a means of not having to repurchase items while living on a disability income. Then I was severely gangstalked. I never totally unpacked knowing that renting wasn't permanent. The stalking and divorce did a double whammy on my mind!! I coped by thinking well, if I can't find it, burglars can't either! 😂 12 years later, owning my own land and mobile home, YouTube PTSD therapy, and healing, I am finally ready to burn/give away almost everything except pics and keepsakes. Time to clear my surroundings and create the peaceful, tidy, environment that will match my soul. Yay!!!!🎉

2) going into control freak mode
3) it's a distraction
4) executive functioning in crisis
5) seeking support in things

My house was clean before I got involved with a covert narcissist. Now I can’t keep anything clean. This explains a lot. Thought-provoking.

The scapegoat daughter of a single narc mother, my room was always cluttered. I was just so drained from having to endure her abuse. For those of you who were married to narc, consider yourself lucky. When it’s your parent, especially a mother it’s kind of difficult to cut off ties and society family and friends guilt you in the staying longer. Plus, the abuse starts as a child and it’s your parents.

I don't know if I agree with all of this but, it is so true that narcissistic abuse can leave you in a state of mental and emotional confusion and even numbness.
You have been abused, criticized, gaslit, put down, fed occasional emotional crumbs, stripped of your energy, your joy, your confidence and so much more.
No wonder being a victim of narcissistic abuse can be so debilitating and can even make you question your own sanity!

My mother threw out almost everything I owned 4 times in my life. Twice as a child, and twice as an adult while I was at work at my 12 hour 6 day a week factory job. She took my treasured things. She took things I asked her specifically not to touch. And she felt entitled to my money too. I clutter things because I’ve had to lose and replace things so many times. It’s not about emotional bandaids. It’s about having decent memories about each of your things because it’s far safer than having feelings around dangerous people.

I simply cannot do the amount of processing required to sort out my belongings because my processing capacity is reduced by trauma.

They hurt you so deep that I wonder if I will ever heal from their abuse . The one thing I know is that they are very sick people .

Honestly, for me it's more the depression, overthinking (leading to trouble in making decisions), and learned helplessness.

Clutter hides my precious things. They are hidden and no one can see them, won’t find them. No one will look at my clutter and think that there is anything valuable there. They can’t take it from me. They won’t even look.

I had narcissist parents and was the family scapegoat. My brother once said to me, "you're worse than Hitler because at least Hitler wasn't useless" (I'm disabled). My brothers grew into excellent narcissists too. Something I've noticed about narcissists is that they are very clean and orderly because they care the most about their image. While we, the deep divers, their mortal enemies, care more about the substance within. Like, I have no desire to present my house to people - I hate having people in my space! But I do prefer it when it's clean so I do clean up after awhile of mess, once it starts to agitate me.

My Mother was a Narcisist, my last boyfriend was a very dangerous Narcisist. My house became so cluttered and dirty in defiance to my Mom and as protection from him. If my house was full and dirty no one would be there and if no one could be there, no one could hurt me. I am in the process of healing and cleaning. I get rid of 27 things a day. It may be little things like Papers. It may be big things like furniture or it may be putting 27 of my books from a box onto a shelf. But 27 things moved changes the energy of a room...Feng Shui. It is working for me. I am slowly finding peace. Thank you for this video it helps me understand myself better.

Wow, this video has answered some questions for me, I went from a neat freak to clutter over the years, I am married to a sneaky covert narcissist, it is like living with a rattle snake, you never know when he is going to strike. The mild clutter is my way of being in control of that small part of my house. I have started decluttering & sending stuff to the Good Will, wish I could send my husband there too. I have got to get out of this mess, I want my life back.

It’s also a way to keep people at arm’s length. When abused by a narcissist there are secrets we have to keep and that naturally keeps people at arm’s length so they don’t find out. Clutter and hoarding create another set of secrets to keep people from getting close because we don’t want others to know about the mess of our lives.

My poor mama. Her family has portrayed her as disorganized and it was just because we had to move with them and they have manipulated that reality when she was never like this. It was them. She has passed and I feel so sorry that I could never see it clearly or that I maybe judged her as well and never truly helped her when I could. I think she did make her room as a way to have control, whatever it was. They still talk to me that way: “your mother was so messy”, and my heart breaks. I know it was her struggle of living with them that broke her and me as well.
