An all-too-large percentage of the population suffers from poor sleep, achy joints, feelings of fatigue, brain fog, and what I call FLC (“feel like crap”) syndrome. This epidemic has a number of factors, most of which are caused by our modern lifestyles and diets. But one of the major factors of such dysfunction is poor mitochondrial health.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I dive deep into our mitochondria—what it is, why it's so important, and what you can do to support your mitochondrial health.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa University, Cozy Earth, and Super Simple Grassfed Protein.

Just a thought about supplements. I am a chemist who worked for a chemical analysis instrument company as a field consultant. Several years ago, I spent a couple of days at a supplement company. They made a "premium" product. Unfortunately, when I made an analysis of the product, instead of one ingredient (which it was supposed to contain), I found ten! My work did not involve identifying those ingredients, but they weren't supposed to be there. The sad truth in American is that the supplement industry is unregulated. Buyer beware, don't expect truth from marketing departments. Also, NONE of the blue zones around the world take supplements.

Sleep deprivation can also make you "feel like crap" even if you are eating healthy. Adequate sleep is more important than diet.

There is so much disparaging of the food supply in the US, so it’s nice to remember that one of the blue zones is also in the US - the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda, CA. Many of them are vegetarians and I think they focus on organic foods, etc, but it’s nice to think that a healthy diet is in fact possible in the US.

Dynamic excercise e.g. in the space of a week, I will walk, run, swim, do yoga and pilates. In doing so one gives stimulus and interest to the brain by not doing the same old routine every time.

Dr. addressed the negatives of blue light, but you didn't mention the many exciting revelations from recent studies of red light and NIR exposure. (speeding up the metabolism in the mitochondria) This entire body of research, along with what you discussed in this video, is a fascinating leap forward in preventative medicine. As a researcher, writer and author, I think that the discoveries in recent, solid research studies must be made more widely known. Treating symptoms will not lengthen lifespan or improve quality of life. Good video.

I've read that oxidative stress is one of the primary things that damage the mitochondria.

Dr. Hyman, when you mentioned diet and good fats, you left out animals fats. Why? You said avocado but left out pasture raised eggs, grass fed grass finished beef, or wild caught salmon and sardines. These are critical in a low carb diet or else you're shifting to veganism. Everything you said was true but what you left out was obvious.

I’ve been told not to take L-Carnitine because it decreases thyroid function. I have hypothyroidism. Do you agree with this Dr Hyman?
