First of all, let’s define which muscles we’re talking about when we say Hip Flexors.

The Iliopsoas muscle is the primary muscle that oversees hip flexion during vigorous activity.

It is assisted by the rectus femoris, the adductor longus, the sartorius, and the gracilis.

Why is it important to train the hip flexors muscles?

Hip flexion is essential during daily activities such as walking, running, or climbing stairs.

For example: during walking, the hip flexor muscles are primarily active at the beginning of the swing phase (initial and mid-swing). [1]

Hip flexion is also essential for foot clearance. Walking faster is associated with increased hip flexor muscle activation. [2]

If you suffer from weakness of the plantar-flexion muscles, you will need to recruit more of your hip flexor muscles to achieve faster walking speeds. [2]

In some cases, even prolonged sitting can cause weakness in those muscles.

Here are two exercises to train those muscles:

👉 Incline plank with hip flexion with stability ball

This is a great exercise to use if those muscles are weak.

The body's incline position makes the beginning of the movement easier because you don't need to work against gravity.

And the stability ball works your abdominal muscles and can benefit people after stroke, with hip flexion and core muscle weakness.

👉 Standing hip flexion (cable)

This exercise can be used after you master hip flexion without any weight and you want to increase the capacity of the muscles.

It is more advanced because of the added resistance provided by the cable.

💡 Did you know hip flexion muscle weakness is common after hip surgeries such as total hip replacement?
