You cannot measure “psychological stress” conveniently in the hospital. Major surgery does correlate with peptic ulcer incidents, however, it’s difficult to prove the stress is the cause of ulcer.

It’s also true that stress can trigger flare ups with ulcerative colitis and Cohns and these flare ups can create new and or worsening ulcers.

if anything the fact that extreme hospital stress correlates with ulcers supports the idea that stress can induce ulcers. it's just a setting where it's much easier to show causality because it's not in the wild.
was watching a dog training show where the body submissive dog in an extremely stressful house hold developed ulcers the vet put for. to stress. they weren't walked much and never offlead so they didn't eat something random and they weren't on nsaids obviously.
if stress impaires healing that could easily cause ulcers bc stomach lining thats not repairing well could be effected by stomach acid

Wanna preface by saying heavily biased and anecdotal evidence (both because it happened to me.)

I have developed ulcers only once in my life. It is also really hard for me to become stressed as a person. 6 years ago I was stressed a lot (but in no pain or any other medication).

Developed ulcers, had to take Omeprazole for a while. After sometime(it's been a while can't remember precisely anymore they were gone)

Idk.. I’ve had ulcers since I was 12 and I wasn’t on NSAIDs. I was under a crap ton of stress tho.

I respect but stress can cause broken heart syndrome. If it can do that just think of what it can’t do in the mucosa. Evidence is sparse just because it is hard to pin down. Good common sense medicine is missing in the medical curriculum

What about gastritis? Can it be stress indiced?

We don’t have good evidence of all the physical manifestations of stress because nobody will fund that enormous longitudinal study.
Of course, we already know that specific, measurable events (for example living in an abusive relationship, being exposed to war), have very strong correlations to specific diseases and conditions, and that the correlation is dose dependent (the longer the exposure the more likely a person is to develop one or more issues). Same with other long term or repeated traumas.
And yes, correlation is not causation, but in social science, we can be pretty confident that there is a strong, directional pattern (stressor before physical illness) after repeating the studies thousands of times over decades in different populations.
Let’s stop isolating individual behaviors and ignoring everything else that’s going on, please.

You're speaking too fast & I can read the subtitles, they're too small. Slow down, please. Thank you Dr.
