As someone that recently freaked out about taking omeprazole long term, I did see my gastroenterologist recently and we discussed this and now have a plan in place. Thank you so much for the content you make as it is both informative and fun.

I have gastroparesis and GERD. The only thing that kept it controlled was Protonix (pantoprazole) and I had no problems with vomiting after I started it.
Then my insurance changed.
Even after my GI doctor appealed the decision 3 times, the insurance company deemed my medication “not medically necessary” and I couldn’t get it anymore. I was taking 3x the dose of OTC reflux medicine and was still having multiple bouts of vomiting acid every week. 3 years later, my insurance changed and I was able to see my doctor and get back on the Protonix 2x per day, and a dose of Pepcid at night. But by then, so much damage had already been done. The uncontrolled GERD destroyed my teeth. I had to get dentures at 31 due to my teeth starting to crumble from the constant acid bath they were exposed to. I have a lot of scarring on my esophagus now and it makes swallowing difficult.
Cigna and OptumRx can go take a long walk off a tall cliff.

IMHO the most important general fact in any safety discussion is that safety is never absolute and can only be interpreted in context. Even breathing has risks associated with it, but the risks are low enough and the benefits high enough that we consider it safe. Same thing for PPIs - long term use is safe *if* you get more benefit from them than the relatively small but very real long term side effects

I talking to an anaesthetist pre op and discuss my medication. I am prescribed omeprazole but only take it when I have symptoms (once or twice a week) and according to him for PPI’s to work properly you have to take them daily.

I had severe appetite/hunger signal/general GI issues for like two years before getting on a PPI. It may have been a number of things but after I got on one my issues drastically decreased and I'm feeling hungry again. I'm personally more then happy risking health issues from taking the meds long term (prescribed by my GI as a "just in case" since there were some eushophilic cells found along with reflux) then risking going back to how I was. 👀

I tried to discuss this topic with my GI specialist. I was totally dismissed. He acted like these complications or side effects didn't exist.

We had alot of people with iatrogenic electrolyte depletions and inbalances in our unit 2ndary to PPI use (Omeprazole mostly). Our acute medical consultant was driven mad by it. However I felt it was from broken followups party from the pandemic, partly because local services were just kind of collapsing. (UK)

For several years, I had GERD. Omeprazole did nothing, Dexilant didn’t help either. I was vexed and moved my dinner time from 7 pm-8pm to 5:30/6pm and since then, no heartburn. Initially, it would come back if I delayed my dinner, but now it’s almost fine🤞🤞

I take Nexium 24 (esomeprazole 20mg) every day. It perfectly controls my epigastric discomfort. I feel guilty for taking it and have tried to cut back but am miserable. My husband takes pantoprazole for Barrett’s esophagus. We both take extra B12. (75 & 77). 🤷🏼‍♀️

And…C-Diff. And, that doesn’t even have to be from long term.

I’ve had GI issues on and off for most of my life and I was diagnosed with GERD about 4 years ago. I was taking a PPI long term and found that when I took it, I was getting very tired, disoriented, and dealt with a lot of brain fog. Is this something anyone else has experienced? I stopped taking it and those symptoms improved but now I’m dealing with the GERD again.

We don't know where to begin, but you are the most caring doctors that we have ever known Dr Emovon on YouTube. You are “heroes" in your family. Thanks so much for curing me from bad breath, the world will definitely hear about this sir #dremovon………

Question: if a PPI like Omeprazol causes B12 deficiency and metformin causes B12 deficiency, how would the patient calculate the required dosage of B12 supplement to compensate?

My gastroenterologist has said that there’ve been some newer studies suggesting that the correlation is not causal. Could you talk a bit about those studies?
