In this video, we’re going to talk about fruit on a ketogenic diet. Can you have fruit on keto? The short answer is no.

There’s too much sugar in fruit. Even in a medium-sized apple, there are 19 grams of sugar.

Additionally, you should avoid all fruit juices. They are completely filled with sugar with hardly any nutrients. Fruit juice companies also add corn syrup to many types of juice, which is very bad for your blood sugar levels.

If you have children, you can give them some fruit because their metabolism can handle it. However, it’s not healthy to give them fruit juice.

Adults who are trying to lose weight should avoid fruit.

Berries are the exception. 1/2-1 cup of berries a day can be beneficial. Berries are low in sugar and high in antioxidants and other vital nutrients.

Thanks for watching. I hope this helped clear up why most fruits are not good on a ketogenic diet. I’ll see you in the next video.

If you don't have problems with weight loss, go ahead and have all the fruits in the world. Good for you. It's for those of us who are trying to loose or keep the weight off on keto where sugar is not good and that includes sugar from fruits. Thanks Dr Berg for always stressing on that.

When you’re in ketosis for say about a month, you’ll see yourself not craving for sweeter fruits anymore. Even having to eat 3x a day becomes bothersome so Intermittent fasting becomes natural/habitual. But still, to each their own. As for me I love staying in ketosis 🙂

I love fruit. Love love love it.

It does make sense however, that farmers over time (thousands of years, have found ways to make their products sweeter and sweeter. And perhaps less healthy than the original items.

But I'm still having trouble imagining a life with little or no fruit.

I find it funny how some people come to this channel looking for advice on Ketosis, then when they get one they don't like they complain. If you don't like it, then go find yourself a diet that will fullfil all YOUR diet requirements. I wish you the best of luck losing and keeping the weight off.

I’m 23 5’10 145 pounds soaking wet I think if you’re not trying to lose weight as he says you can get away with something like a green apple, berries, and some other fruits in moderation especially if youre intermittent fasting and just starting out on your health journey. Being overly restrictive in the beginning phases can be rough and cause a lot of stress which can create problems itself.

When you said no fruit I immediately thought "Nope. Not for me." But then you said I could have berries. Thats all I care about! Hahaha.

People look at me aghast when I say I no longer eat fruit because of the sugar. My blood sugar is normal and that's all that matters.

The *Agoge diet* works great and you feel good, in contrast to keto. Keto isn't supposed to be adhered to by healthy people and without medical supervision.

If you want the sweeter fruits, do this: After reaching some weightless milestone, go out of ketosis. Eat the fruit you have wanted while in season for a week or two. Avoid fat while doing this since you cannot use it. It will be stored as fat. Sugar does not really get converted to fat nearly so easily. What sugar does is block any use of dietary fat. If you eat bread and butter all the butter is sored as fat. I would even recommend going with plant based meals because plant proteins tend not to cause as much insulin response like a lean animal protein. Proteins are best buffered with fat or fiber. Then perhaps some separate meals with fish and vegetables during this "vacation". Even some sardines will get you a complete protein B12, EPA and DHA. You will not gain weight doing this. You will essentially be a pesco vegetarian during this time.

Do not try to to add sweet fruits when trying to fat burn. It doesn't mix. You are better off completely switching to sugar burning for short periods of time. Without much fat insulin sensitivity will be quite good, especially after you have cut weight. No whole food is forbidden to you this way, even grains.

Is Keto even sustainable long term? I can't imagine a life where I'm worried about eating fruit besides berrys and avocados.

Dr Berg, can you kindly do some more videos on children's nutrition? I guess I'm worried about how many times a day the kids get hungry, I don't want to screw up their metabolisms with snacking but my kids are very high energy and I really watch their sugar intakes...not perfect but we do our best. Can you please do a series of kids health videos that would help explain what is okay to do and what would mess them up?

I've always eaten lots of fruit when trying to lose weight and it worked well for me. Probably because I cut way down on deserts and ate fruit instead. Love honey crisp apples. My favourite.

Here's the thing.... fruit on a keto diet is absolutely FINE. The issue is, if you do fruit, you need to understand that its going to kick you out of ketosis if you have any type of quanity, so you'd want to limit your fruit intake to only occasionally, and also do all your fruit intake at the same time so you have one insulin spike, and one instance of sugar intake. What I mean by that, instead of having a banana in the morning that day, then an apple at lunch and a cup of berries in the evening, just eat the apple and banana and berries at the same time in the morning or for lunch or whatever. You'll also have to keep in mind that you're out of ketosis for at least a few hours, depending on how far along you are on a keto diet, and that eating fruit can kick you out of keto for as long as a week if you're new to the diet. So if you're trying to lose weight for sure stay away from it til you get to your target weight, but also if you're on keto to heal diabetes symptoms/insulin resistance, you'd want to avoid that stuff altogether for a very long time, for at least a few months to a year. But once your body has adapted to keto, and once your organ fat has been burned away, and your intermittent fasting is frequently triggering autophagy, then a bowl of fruit with say, some kefir or something every once in a while would be fine. Especially if your body goes back into keto only a few hours or a day after eating fruit. You'd definitely want to space it out... but yeah. Fruit is actually very good for you. Maybe not the GMO fruit, but fruit as it comes naturally is really good. But in nature, you wouldn't find a whole lot of fruit while forraging so it'd be considered more of a treat in caveman times and you just wouldn't be able to access it very often so on keto treat it the same way and you should be good. Also, if you decide to eat fruit, its good to do so in the morning when that cortisol level is high.... Also be aware that when you DO eat fruit, that you might experience a craving for fruit the next day or so due to your body having to switch to carb burning to digest it. But so long as you listen to your body and are disciplined, fruit's fine....

One of the hardest things I found on my Keto fasting diet was drastically cutting way back on the fruit that I used to take
