When I was a kid, I used to get very stressed out when I didn't get to fall asleep, because I didn't want to be tired or whatever, but then my mom said that even just laying in bed resting can help your brain charge its battery, so to speak. Since then, when I couldn't fall asleep, I'd be a lot more relaxed about it. I'd often decide I'd make the best of the time I was awake and would amuse myself by making up simple fantasy stories until I eventually fell asleep. I understand that when it's been hours, you do get kind of frustrated, but this can also help change the way you think about sleep a bit. The goal is not necessarily to fall asleep fast, it's just to rest.

Falling asleep is no problem, it's the waking up at ungodly hours (2am, 4am, 5am) that is my problem... :-/

Your bed is also for when you're sick. The 3 S' s: sleep, sex, sick. At least that's what I learned in the hospital. Great video!

Hi kati, i just got my official diagnosis for BPD, i have a really difficult time trusting and warming up to adults, or even tolerating them. I am very sensitive to body language in others and how i precieve how people are talking to me (at me). And i am quick to become hostile and defensive. However i find your voice to be somewhat soothing. You never sound patronising and you give constructive and reassuring advice. I find you very enjoyable to watch and listen to. You are one of the few people i feel "understands". I feel taken seriously here and heard. Thanks so much for all the work you put in!

The amount of sleep that we get can be secondary sometimes as long as the QUALITY of the sleep is good and makes us feel healthy and awake during the day. That's what I found out for myself when I was struggling with extreme insomnia and the realisation itself helped me tremendously

Leave the animals out? I don't know if I agree with that. My pup will spend the entire night scratching at the door, keeping me awake. Plus their presence always makes me feel safe enough to sleep.

Considering I only got less than an hour of sleep last night, this video is just what I needed 😊

Love these less conventional tips! I have an itty bitty newborn so I’m up all night but a lot of these are still applicable 😊

For me reading helps A LOT. It takes my mind off things and makes me more tired until I reach the end of a chapter or am ready for bed. As a person who would stay up till 4-5 am reading at around 10-11 has helped me a lot. I tend to go to bed at around 11-11:30 which compared to before is a big improvement! Especially since I have chronic Fatigue which makes me tired all day and to stay up till 5 after being awake for about 16 hours it's tough. So I think reading actually helps you fall asleep(at least for me) so don't completely rule it out

Do you think you could do a video on being afraid to sleep? I have a really bad relationship with sleep and find myself night after night up at 4-8 am still awake and tired but fighting sleep because I'm afraid something will happen when I fall asleep and I just don't know what to do

Oh, the irony that this video gets released on the day I have to pull an all-nighter for an essay

When i have trouble with insomnia i start making up stories when i go to bed. Just close my eyes and start picturin some adventure or mystery in my mind. I create characters, plots and where the story takes place. At some point i fall asleep. Im a lucid dreamer and often i dream of my stories, so i never have bad dreams.

Tips 2 and 3 helped me so much, getting up and doing something seems to cut those awkward "Why am I awake at this time?" periods in half.

However the first one, I imagine is hard for a lot of people. Multiple therapists and Doctors have hammered in the importance of keeping work/play and sleep separated. Some of us don't have the ability to do that. Living in a small apartment or in a shared house/dorm basically throws that idea out of the window. My apartment has a kitchen/dining area, bathroom and bedroom, is physically impossible for me to move everything else out of the only room where I can relax.

I'd be pretty okay with accepting this but I swear it's the first thing any Doctor mentions when I bring up sleeping issues and it's always "non-negotiable" to the point where some Doctors accused me of not putting full effort in when I said I had no choice.

Not ragging on you Kati, you're wonderfully helpful as always! But I can't help but feel the importance of that first tip is constantly undermined by a physically inability to follow through without serious and expensive life changes. I wish I lived somewhere with a living room and a study, but I'm stuck here.

My mom has been having trouble sleeping most of her life, in that she wakes up several times during the night. She has developed 2 strategies: 1) go up and eat an early breakfast, then go to bed again. 2) always having a with headphones close by, and when she can't sleep she listens to something (this makes the time waiting to fall asleep enjoyable, but if you set the sound low enough it doesn't keep you from falling asleep). I have tried both and it does take away so much of the anxiety of not being able to fall asleep.
