How not to stall a manual car is about moving off in a petrol car compared to moving off in a diesel car. I talk about the importance of setting the gas first and finding the biting point second. I hope it helps you with your driving.

This really helped me! I learnt in a diesel and only ever stalled it once! Soon as I started to drive my own petrol car, I stalled every day (so embarrassing) thanks for this!

Thank you! I’ve been driving now for a week and I’ve stalled a few times. Seriously knocks my confidence, even though I passed first time! I was always taught to find the biting point and then set the gas, but I’ll be trying your tips :)

Doesn't help that most people learn in diesel cars due to better fuel economy, and I used to do this a few times when I got my petrol car. I don't look at the rev counter much, but I listen for a gentle constant hum. If it's too loud you're revving too much if its too quiet the engine is idling. So it's clutch down into gear, set the gas, then slowly raise the clutch, and at the same time add more gas if needed, nearly always in that order. Hope that helps.

Thanks very much for doing this! As i said in message, i have learnt in a diesel, passed my test wednesday first time but now feel nervous in my aygo petrol as ive been taught to move off with just the clutch and also do manoeuvres with mostly just the clutch so getting used to a petrol is new territory! been out and practised in a quiet car park then drove round with hubby practising last night. I think it would help if everyone could possibly learn in a petrol as diesels are very forgiving indeed! Once you can drive a manual petrol you can drive anything i think :) Its remembering 'gas, clutch, gas, clutch' now instead of being i suppose a bit lazy in a diesel and pulling of with the torque pull then adding gas. Still scared to stop on hills but will use my handbrake MUCH more! Thanks for this James and your videos are bloomin awesome! have helped me soooo much to pass!

Had my license since march, and I still stall ! So this helps! Peugeot 107s have a naturally high clutch so that really DOESNT help! I was always taught to do my clutch first so I really appreciate this!

Had an instructor teach me to lift the clutch to the biting point and then apply gas (using a petrol Toyota Corolla). Obviously I was stalling all the time because of this and the habit has continued with me for many years.

I live in America and learned MT 2 days ago; i stalled maybe 8 times in the past 2 days(i suck, i know) but, it was because my brother taught me to release the clutch THEN give it gas... i tried the gas then release clutch method and i've only stalled once since. I will say this though, my gas pedal is alot touchier than my last car, so i kind of have a problem with over revving, im working on it though.
My car now is a '99 Honda Civic Si c;

I wrote on one of your videos, the other day saying I'v got my test soon, and it's tomorrow at 10:15. I'm actually quite excited but I know il be nervous when the time comes. the thought of passing it though is unbelievable, do I'm determined to pass first time.

What about when you're on a flat surface only stopping briefly like at a roundabout in a petrol car? I've been so used to having my foot on the brake, finding the bite/adding gas in my diesel :/ . Would I just not bother with anything or use handbrake everytime I stop no matter the incline? Sorry if this sounds silly.

It amazes me how many people don't set the gas first before bite and some that only use the clutch without any gas whatsoever. Then they look all confused when they stall or move off slower than everybody else. If you think about it logically, you are trying to move 1200KG+ large chunk of metal with people inside from a standstill without gas. Obviously it's not going to work....
