In this video, I show you how to avoid rolling back or stalling on hills.
This is a common problem many learner drivers come across on their driving lessons.

Doing hill starts as a learner most are afraid of setting the gas. Most get taught to move off with the brake and the clutch, bad habits brought on by the instructor. This is the main reason why so many struggle not helped when a learner buys their first car it's a small engine. Petrol as well, which NEEDS gas set, just to move the car.

Hills are scary, rolling backwards for me is the worst thing. I've mastered hills a little bit but with the hand break. On my last driving lesson my instructor taught me this technique, at first I thought she held the break for me as I lifted the clutch and applied gas. I said to her "thanks for holding the break" she said "I didn't do anything, you did it all by yourself". I couldn't believe it!

Currently in the process to buying a manual car for the first time. Very scared of bumper to bumper traffic as well as having to stop on an incline. This video helped me understand how taking off on a hill can be done correctly and helped a lot!

I’m from Ireland, but love your videos. I’m so nervous with hills, I’ve been driving nearly a year, still haven’t went for my full test. Thanks for the great videos

Two things about Pin's demo I wanted to point out:

1. When doing clutch control, where your holding the car still with the clutch and gas for long periods of time can cause premature wear and tear of the clutch, it also heats up the clutch pedal, which is not good. If you apply the handbrake whilst using the clutch bite point, once the handbrake is securely on, press the clutch down to let it cool down, and when an opportunity comes, anticipate by preparing the clutch bite point with gas, handbrake off, let the clutch connect smoothly with the engine, once the revs rise up, then off the clutch completely, gas up the hill, depending on the engine and the hill gradient, anything less than 2500rpms is for most cases not ideal. Lower gears help with acceleration, because there's more torque/rotational power.

2. Learner drivers need to know when the car is on or off, regardless of whether the car is a newer one or older. If the engine is quiet and doesn't give you any noticeable clues as to whether the car's off, tell the learners to look at the rev counter/tachometer. If the point is on 0rpm, the car's of course off, since if the car was on, that would mean the engine is turning, and at idle it turns anywhere from 500-800/900rpms. Also, in most cases, when you do stall, some of the warning lights may come on, such as the yellow "check engine" light and the red air bag symbol. It's crazy how some learner drivers go blank when they stall, and try to move off again, when the pedals aren't responsive; this should be a clear indication of the engine being turned off, but of course there's always the possibility of the learner assuming the car restarts itself by pressing the clutch back down, and not needing to turn the engine on manually.

I highly, highly recommend pulling the handbrake for newer drivers. I live in an extremely hilly area so I had to do a lot of this. Since you quickly roll back the second you take your foot off the brake, you panic and likely bring the clutch up too far. Once your comfortable you can hold the clutch and the gas on a steep give-way hill to keep the car from rolling back.

Thank you so much, it was very useful. I got my driving licence 22 years ago having lessons with manual gear car, but since then I always had automatic. Now I have to use manual car again and this lesson helped me with this task.

I salute you for your patience sir this shouldn't be a free content lol 🙈🙈

I've been driving manual for 5 years now then recently changed cars now I'm struggling to control this new car clutch during traffic going up hill. The struggle is real.

As someone who learned to drive in a diesel car, after 2 months of driving a petrol car, i still found hill starts kinda awkward since you have to press the acceleration a lot more while lifting the clutch, so most of the time i either stall or i m going over 3k rpm

They taught me right off the start to let the clutch off until i can feel the car shaking a bit, the engine's note dips a bit too, release the brake and give just a little bit of throttle. From then on it's easy for me to control it.
You don't really need to release the clutch too much, if you keep it on the biting point the car usually has enough power to stand still, or to roll just a little bit.
They made me practice in a hilly residential area, so i could take my time and learn without problems
