Why do people enjoy feeling melancholy? 💔

The saints would always ask Jesus to give them suffering, to be more like Him. Then they would offer it back up to Him as a redemptive offering. Many times they wrote they found such “sweetness” in this suffering.
I’m not a saint, but I’ve tried this and it is strange. The suffering turned to an ineffable sweetness even too beautiful to contemplate.
But, then some suffering begets no such thing as sweetness and still one must bear it.
I will tell you a secret about painting that few have ever known.
If you are painting and you want someone who sees your painting to feel the emotion of it, then you must project those feelings into the painting AS you are painting. Do you think one can sing, not feeling and projecting what they are singing and that the audience will be able to feel the emotion of the song? It is the same for the painter. You want the painting to tell the story and vibrate with emotion? Then you must paint with emotion into the painting. That is what being an artist is all about….to make others “feel.” If you do not agree, take time to think about it.
