My former in-laws decided to move to Maui to retire. They lived modestly in the Silicon Valley of California. I don't think they did their homework regarding the cost of living and ended up on a ground floor condo, with a view of the parking lot. My Mother-in-law was miserable, my Father-in-law was happy doing his artistic endeavors. He died suddenly and she moved back to California and lived with her son and Daughter-in-law. Partly because they spent most of their retirement funds and partly because of her health. They only lived in Hawaii for about 5 years. It was sad.

The first point about no chain restaurants sounds like a great reason to move to Hawaii... coming from an area that prides itself on local food and locally owned restaurants I can say that chain restaurants are NOT all that.

I know someone who got a severe bacterial infection from going barefoot in the soil on the big island. He said there were many poor people on the eastern side, but everyone was helpful. A group of people took him to the hospital and his bill was taken care of. He said the abundance was amazing, even if you don't have money. But not everyone can opt for that lifestyle.

I sold my condo in McCully and home in Palolo Valley last year. Bought a great house in Northern California with cash recently. Hawaiis a great place if you have money. Traffic on Oahu is Hell. If you move there take a year and keep your opinions to yourself and get a feel for the place. People are great if you are kind and humble.

When I was in Navy boot camp (basic training) it came time to fill out our Duty Area Preference Form (a.k.a. the "Dream Sheet" because you can request what you want, but the Navy's under no obligation to send you there.) Our company commander warned us about requesting Hawaii saying, "The only guys who want to be stationed in Hawaii are the ones who have never been stationed there."

When I was in Las Vegas I met a local who moved from Hawaii. He said he hated living in Hawaii and when he moved to Vegas the first thing he thought was “dry land”!! Now Las Vegas is not for everyone but he loves living there.

we now have Olive Garden, Dunken doughnut, one island has a krispy kreme, and we are about to get chick-fil-a. About the homeless being sent to Hawaii all you have to do is ask the homeless person where are they from and how did they get here.

I lived on the big island (Hawaii) for 6 years ending in 2016. Much more affordable house prices on the East side of the island than pretty much anywhere else in the state however the threat of lava covering you property is a huge reality. Mosquitos are terrible mostly at dawn and dusk. It takes a good while to get settled but there really are some very nice folks there

lmao the getting bothered by a large flying roach while on the toilet had me rollin' ( nothing to defend himself except an air freshen spray, the roach survived, and he came out smelling like a bed bath and beyond''

My mom saw a homeless person die and get carted off in an ambulance when she visited Hawaii from the camp in front of the hotel. I dont think those were the type of memories she was looking for.

There are Krispy Kremes and Dunkin Donuts in Hawaii . . . although why you would want to go there when there are literally thousands of local bakeries that produce a better product--heck, even local "chain" Napoleon's Bakery does a better job! The food is one of the BEST things about Hawaii--mainly BECAUSE there are so few national "chain" restaurants. Eating "local" is the best thing about any place.

I was born in Hawaii and it’s just gotten worse how expensive everything is, me and my family have been trying so hard to find a new home but everything is so expensive! We have a few months to find a home but like I said everything is like crazy expensive…It’s honestly not fair it’s come to the point we’re considering moving to the mainland. I love hawaii I was raised and born here but im honestly just tired. Also I don’t wanna be rude to anyone but rich old white men come here during their retirement and think they can treat server workers like a piece of toilet paper we don’t get paid enough for that shit, I honestly don’t. As a person of color and that works part time jobs I’ll have to say goodbye to my home state…

I could never spend more than a couple of months on any island. You’re just trapped on this little island, stuck only being able to do the things to do on that island. Kauai is nice though, at least to visit.

I had twenty years of joy living in Hawaii. The people, alone, were worth the cost. Then I moved to a hateful and disgusting gulag called Washington state. I regret my decision daily.

California shipping homeless people to Hawaii. That insanely makes a lot of sense and is something California would do.

I lived in Dana Point, CA my entire life almost and I pay less living on Oahu with great living conditions and no housemates.
You can rent a studio for under $1, 000 a month on Oahu

I am from Hawaii. I agree with you on most of your points however I have to disagree with you on the food. Hawaii has the best food however most mom and pop restaurants have closed because of the strict pandemic policies. I don’t live there anymore because of the points you mentioned and more but Hawaii is home and someday I hope to return 🥲❤️🙏🏼🤙🏼
