There is an early hint at the true identity of Miguel’s real great-great grandfather. On the headstock of Ernesto’s guitar, there is detailing of a skull with a single yellow tooth. When we first meet Hector, as he grins you can see he too has a yellow tooth. This indicates early on in the movie that th guitar actually belongs to him, seeing as Ernesto has a full mouth of pearly whites when we see him both in alive and dead.

When you look back at the guitar stealing scene after finishing the movie you realize that yes Miguel did steal from the dead but he didn’t steal from Erenesto but instead he stole from Hector because it was his guitar originally.
