There is an early moment in the movie that could hint at Ernesto not being as good of a musician as everyone thinks. When Miguel is watching the video of him, there is a moment where the camera zooms in on Ernesto’s hands when he is beautifully playing notes on his guitar. The fact that there is such a close up on the hands as these notes are played could imply that Ernesto is using a double, as wide shows of Ernesto playing show him playing more simplistically. This all could act as a hint to Ernesto being as talented as it is believed.

I find it rather amusing that Ernesto was surprised that he had a family, let alone a great grandson.
A man as accomplished and decorated as Ernesto De La Cruz would absolutely have had a lovely bride, no? He was a traveling musician, a movie star, a well known celebrity. He must've had a wife, and some late night lovers to pepper in unknown kids.
However, Ernesto is visibly taken aback to Miguel's existence. At his age, it is very obvious time-wise that he would have a great grandson. But its not obvious to him, because Ernesto never had a family! He never married, and even if he has children, its most likely local myth that someone is related to the affamed Ernesto De La Cruz.
Am I saying Ernesto is gay, tho? Probably not, given everything we see about him. He was probably just too self absorbed and prideful to ever settle down, because family means ties, and ties prevent you from flying to stardom and wealth.
THAT was enough proof alone that Ernesto was a fraud.

Ernesto was a talented guitar player, he just wasn't a good song writer. If he wasn't a good guitar player he wouldn't have gotten famous in the first place.

I don't think it's true. He did play on the plaza and in live performances. He plays music beautifully. The only thing he ain't good of it writing songs as good as Hector's.

Yeah but like that isn't a fun fact, that's just a theory. You can't just say "it's probably a stunt double" and make that true, that's a theory of what you think happened.
Also like he's made albums, you're telling me a bunch of people helped fake albums and absolutely no one told on him, especially a musician who could gain a lot of fame if they were the real person behind a famous artist? He stole the guys guitar but that doesn't mean he didn't know how to play or even didn't learn after he killed that guy. If there's like a thousand would be musicians who watched videos or attended his concerts, you'd think at least a couple would notice something is off with his notes when they tried to practice his songs.
