Dr. Rowe shows easy exercises to quickly relieve piriformis muscle tightness and pain.

The piriformis muscle is a major cause of pain around the buttock and posterior thigh. What usually causes this is a blend of muscle weakness and tightness that leads to strain.

If it gets bad enough, it may lead to piriformis syndrome (or pseudo-sciatica) that can cause pain, numbness, and tingling down the thigh and into the leg.

To fix this, we'll focus on lengthening and strengthening the piriformis, that way we can get both quick and long-lasting relief.

Each exercise works differently. To get the best results, make sure to go through them all and use what gives you the most relief.

I never comment on videos but I had to say THANK YOU!!! I have been in agony for 4 straight days because my piriformis was so tight and nothing worked. That step back stretch was exactly what I needed. Halfway through the second set I felt it release and it was such blessed relief I nearly cried. God bless you and thank you again.

Your videos have helped me more than any therapist, doctor, medication, etc. has in 25 years! I did the last exercise first without much hope and WOW!!! With just 2-3 reps my hip pain was 95% gone immediately!! I’ve been doing all of them daily for the last 5 days and haven’t had to take NSAIDs once since then!!!! Oh my goodness Dr Rowe, thank you so much for sharing these postures! I have had aching buttocks (lol) and aching down my thighs for a couple of months now due to 5 weeks sitting cross legged in a meditation posture and then months of inactivity and have narrowed it down to tightened pifiromus - I have just started these specific stretching and strengthening postures and they are helping so much - I cannot thank you enough! 🙏🙏🙏💖

Nobody has diagnosed me with Piriformis issues, but I have been going to a PT without much relief. I have spent some time looking into what might be the issue and it sounds exactly what it says, so I will try these exercises and report back. Thank you!
