"Never wake a sleeping baby" is age-old advice that we've all heard at some point. And when you've been struggling to get your baby to sleep, waking them seems like something you would never, ever, want to do.

But sometimes it's actually better to wake your baby. In some cases it's for safety reasons, and in some cases it leads to improved sleep and a more predictable sleep schedule.

In this video you'll learn when you should wake your baby and why it can be a good thing.

As always, I hope this makes your life as a parent a little easier, and helps you and your baby get some more much-needed rest.

I always find myself justifying to my mum and MIL that i have to take my 2 month old out of the car seat at the end of a journey. They dont quite understand the reason why i bought one that isnt a combo system (seat stays in car, baby goes into pram) but i know that from watching your videos, her safety is most important over her staying asleep.

OMG!!! We’ve been struggling with putting our baby(4, 5 month old) to sleep for the last month or so - she would show tired cues but as soon as I tried putting her to sleep she would start fussing and scream more and more. I tried to keep her up for 2, 5 hours after the last nap for the last 2 days and she fell asleep with minimal fuss!!! Thank you ❤️

When I was a child, my 5mo cousin died of positional asphyxiation. My aunt and uncle were with him and their older child at Disneyland, and he was happy in the stroller all morning, and fell asleep early in the day. They didn't notice anything was wrong until they went to check on him closely after he had only been asleep in the stroller, for half an hour at most, and he was blue. He was already dead by the time they even noticed anything was wrong, even though they were literally watching him sleep.

When I was a kid I was only told what happened was called sids, and that babies just sometimes stop breathing. I didn't know about positional asphyxiation until your videos, and honestly learning about it makes me wonder why this isn't like, the first thing they tell new parents!! Honestly I think the carseat-to-stroller contraptions should be illegal, for encouraging such risk.

Our oldest was left in a swing a lot of the time and caused the muscles in his neck to develop incorrectly, causing for bad posture in his neck and arms. Luckily it was reversible after about a month or so of stretches and physical therapy

My babies only sleep in my hands. It is hard. But I know this time flies so fast I actually enjoy it.

Great advice!!! Loving the practical and commonsense and full of real life reasons to explain why….gives me as a grandma faith that such advice is still there for a lot of new mums who have no idea which advice to take because there are so many confusing trending must do’s given by uneducated people.

My baby only naps for 30 minutes multiple times throughout the day and nap 10 mins at night and fuss and cry and keep doing this till 4 am. She also wont stay awake longer than an hour and a half during the day but at night she stays awake for 3-4 hours. I am losing my mind.

What's the difference between the car moving or being stationary? Why is it dangerous to let him sleep when we've arrived but not during the ride?

Thanks for the excellent advice, again! We struggled so much with my son's sleep and learned all of this by trial and error. Had a bit of a laugh at #4 - I live in central Canada and sunrise at winter solstice is almost 9 am! Definitely not getting any sunlight when we start the day, haha!

Yes. I ALWAYS move her to safe space. It isn't worth the risk. This means less sleep for me😂😂😂😂 but oh well. My anxiety wont let me leave her in the carseat.

Is the car seat sleeping scenario valid for older babies/ toddlers?

Here is what I don’t understand—babies sleep in the car seat while driving all the time. You still won’t see how they are positioned—they are rear facing for at least 1 year. So why is it ok for them to fall asleep and stay asleep in the car seat in the car if it is dangerous for the baby to sleep in the car seat out of the car?

My baby sleeps worse and worse with every passing month. He is 7, 5 months old. He slept best as a newborn. He was capable of sleeping 4-6 hours without waking every night.

Lately he wakes every 40-60 minutes, rarely sleeping 2 hours without waking.

Maybe teething plays a part in it. He grew 5 new teeth in 5 or 6 weeks.

Also he learned to sit up and classic crawl. Usually in lighter sleep he suddenly rolls, starts crawling, sits up and in this way wakes himself up and starts crying to be soothed to sleep again.

In the morning he is all smiles and I am broken lunatic.

I was just wondering if the baby can also suffocate when s/he sleeps in the baby wrap carrier because the head doesn’t remain straight, but tilt a little bit.
