Does Regeneration Precede Faith?

Whenever the gospel, or good news about Jesus’ death and resurrection, is preached, it demands a response. Faith is the hands by which a person receives the gift of salvation. Therefore, it is commanded of us to respond to the gospel by faith. Although faith is something we must do, we also see that faith is something that God must work in a person’s heart. This dynamic regarding faith is also true regarding repentance. What does it mean to repent? Repentance is a sorrow over one’s sin resulting in a change in one’s actions. It is a 180 degree turn from sin to Christ. Like faith, repentance is something that both we must exercise, and God must give to people. Now, faith and repentance are different than regeneration. What is regeneration? Regeneration is the act of God in which he imparts new life to an individual. While faith and repentance are a process, regeneration is an instantaneous act. While faith and repentance are commanded, regeneration is never commanded by God.
