There is a Toyota dealership in the San Francisco Bay Area that sent me an "offer" for a car that I am interested in. However, they added things like "Eco Block" (paint protector) and other nonsense. These were things that often cost $20-40 bulk and the dealership was charging THOUSANDS OF $$$s for it. I laughed at the absurdity of it. The salesman told me that they couldn't sell the car without it. I told him that I would look elsewhere. He actually got angry with me on the phone. So, I hung up on him.

A few days later, that same guy sheepishly called me back and offered the same vehicle (with those items already "added") but I wouldn't have to pay for it. I still said, "No thanks." I explained that I'm content on waiting until the inventory is restocked and I can actually compare prices to lock in a better price. This made the salesman irate (again). I then told him that, because of his attitude, I wouldn't buy from him even if he was the only salesman available.

Told the dealership that I didn’t want the 2K to 5K markups on the new vehicle. They replied that I don’t have a choice. I walked! I don’t put up with bullying!

A few years ago a friend of mine was buying his very first car, a VW Jetta brand new car. He put his deposit and went a few days later to sign papers and pick up the car and I went along as well as another friend who had sold BMWs for a long time. There was a charge for an electronic rust protection device which was already installed without consultation or consent for $1.200.00. Our other friend who had worked at a BMW dealership and sold Beamers for years was not pleased that our buyer friend was being fleeced for this, especially since BMWs, WV and Audies are some of the least rust prone cars in the industry (not 100% but high). The buyer wanted this removed but the dealership manager got involved and said it was impossible since it was now part of the car. Manager told the buyer there was a choice... accept it or they cancel the deal and he cannot get his deposit back, period. In effect Don Valley Volkswagon blackmailed my friend to the tune of $1, 299 and who knows what else they fleeced from him with their extortion. Stay away from this unscrupulous dealer.

Avoid these Fees:
1. Nitrogen Fee tire inflation
2. Anti-Theft Protection Fee/ Etching/ Platinum Security/ Secure guard
3. Wheel & Tire protection packages
4. Interior (leather spray) & Exterior protection package (paint sealant)
5. Body-Gard Rust & underbody protection/ Electronic Rust Protection ($800 - $3K) - the electronic module that's installed underneath the hood of the car that sends an electrical current across the car which helps prevent rust from forming - no evidence that works.

I recently went to a Toyota dealership and the manager said they were only selling vehicles with those “packages” and I said I didn’t them need. They also didn’t allow me to buy the car cash or with my own financing. We had to use their banks who were charging 8% interest. Ridiculous!! The manager told me he didn’t need my business. He even said that the car shortage is so bad that he knew for a fact that most of his cars would get sold that week.

The struggle to buy a car right now is real!!

I literally laughed at the salesman for telling me there was a $200 fee for nitrogen in my tires. I also asked them to take off the Toyoguard protection for $700, Floormats $400, pin striping $250 and phone charger/cable package $73 and they told me no. It was already built into the vehicle & assigned to that vin# but the vehicle hadn't been built yet!!

Many of these these appear to be near Criminal Fraud.

I bought the Mercedes Tire/wheel protection for 6 years. It was not cheap ($4300 plus tax), but they changed my tires as I went through a construction zone. So I have brand new tires that were close to $800 a piece. ( it’s an S class coupé with 20 inch multi spoke AMG staggered wheels and performance summer tires. And I had a flat with my winter tire and it was changed too. So I got my money’s worth.

Thank you. This was a super informative and helpful message. I found this video after doing a search regarding info on these dealer 'extras'. And, exactly as you described, the dealer stated they have already put the EuroGuard, the Clear Shield, and the wheel locks on the vehicle and therefore they were unable to discount the cost of these which totaled $2385. I declined. I look forward to when this madness cools off.

Excellent video, as I just made a purchase on a new vehicle through Mazda and experienced this very thing of preinstalled features that I could not decline because they were making it part of the sale when in fact the regular MSRP was much lower. I quickly declined and purchased what I wanted that was best suited for my budget and didn’t allow the dealers to pressure me into any additional packages or services. Be careful out there everyone because these dealerships are going through it and will do whatever to take advantage.

Thank you for your great advice...And for taking the time for your thoughful videos.
I just bought a used car from a dealer today. I feel my anxiety going through the roof. Some of this is normal for me, however, I have always been told to NEVER purchase a used vehicle from a dealer. But I have been searching for probably about a month for a decent used low or ok mileage vehicle and like you said there is little to choose from. Even private owners are price gouging...So I guess I am just sharing my experience...

Great list! I have seen all these except the electronic rust protection. We have been shopping and I disappointed how many dealers are running one scam or another. There are a few good dealers out there. You just have to look. They will keep our business when this all ends. You are right that we need to stand up to this, no wonder why people like the Tesla model.

Great video... very helpful. I would like to add... if you bring a car to trade in and you are asked to give the keys for someone to value it (it does happen, sometimes you wind up handing over the keys without even thinking about it) STOP. I had this happen twice, where I literally had to threaten to call the police because they would NOT give back the keys so I could leave. Not fun.

Thank you for the excellent video. Reading through all the comments here, I am almost scared to even approach any dealerships. I wish I could use your service but unfortunately I am moving to Calgary soon. I hope the dealerships there are a bit better. Or maybe I'll just buy one from a used car yard or something. This is so depressing!
