What to Say to Someone Who Is Dying | Dr. Margaret Cottle

Dr. Margaret Cottle, a hospice and palliative care doctor, advises on what to say to someone who is dying. Dr. Cottle is trained in a particular form of end-of-life care, Dignity Therapy. Dignity Therapy is specifically designed to value and support those facing the end of their life. Among Dr. Cottle's advice for interacting with those approaching the end of life, she suggests:

1. Don't be afraid to talk to those facing death and the end of life. This is a beautiful chance to be, "God with skin on" for those facing difficult circumstances.

2. Ask questions about their life. What they enjoyed most in life? What they want their family to remember about them?

3. Remind them that, as Christians, "We have this hope as an anchor for our souls..." - Hebrews 6:19a.

4. If you're the one approaching death or the end of life, allow others to care for you.

What's the worst part of this for you?

When did you feel most alive?

What were some of your favorite roles that you played?

What do you want your family to remember?

What are your wishes for them?

Don't give them Romans 8:28
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

Good Bible verse to share
"We have this hope as an anchor for our souls..."
Hebrews 6.19

When my father was in hospice care, I simply told him I was going to miss him. He couldn't answer but I could see his answer in his eyes.

When my mother-in-law was in hospice, I told her that we all loved her and would miss her very much, but we would take care of each other and she didn't need to worry about us. I told her if she was ready, she could let go and nothing bad would happen, and that it wouldn't hurt and she wouldn't be alone.
