I like that, especially with family. Sometimes family can say things "in fun" but asking them what their intent is makes them think a little more about their comments. Might not change it but they still have to think and realize that it's not fun to you

I use to do that with doctors who would be derogatory to me as a nurse. I'd say "could you repeat that please?" I don't ever recall them repeating it.

When people ask weird questions, I like to reply with another question, “why do you ask?” while keeping a smile on my face. 🙂 That way when they respond, I can determine if they asked their question in good faith or not. And if it wasn’t, I just continue to smile at them while they stand speechless, & It boils their blood if they were looking for a negative reaction. 😂 But if the person were genuine with their question, I like those, & those always turn into a pleasant conversations.😊

Wish I'd known this while growing up with a narcissistic mother. I do remember saying "why don't you ever have anything good to say?" The silence was palpable!

You don't have to be nice to anyone, esp someone who isn't nice or kind to you. Handle it however you see fit, from silence to laughter to a good old-fashioned cuss-out, do whatever beings you the most joy.

I had a frumpy lady call me over at a public pool once asking why I never fixed my stretch marks and huge scar I have running up my entire abdomen (from an emergency surgery for internal bleeding). I did exactly this!! I asked her to say it again…which the second time she said it much quieter and with no eye contact… then I asked her “you called me all the way over here to tell me this?” . She didn’t have anything to say after that and I walked away, eating my ice cream cone in my bikini.

It still upset me, and when I got back to my pool chair and told my husband and brother-in-law, they proceeded to walk straight over to a hose, dragged it all the way over to her and sprayed her in the face. L O L it caused a ruckus, but it was worth it.

You don’t ask if they said that to hurt you because then you’re admitting to them that they did and that’s the satisfaction that they get. The best thing you can do to someone who likes to belittle you is to avoid them entirely and do not give them your time in any capacity.

Brilliant!!! Do it several times I'd say. Each time they'll look ridiculous. (I wish i knew these back then . I got TOTALLY crushed by the horrible toxic people all around me 😢. )
